Riot is finally fixing League’s mobility creep problem in Season 11

Riot tackles League’s mobility creep in Patch 11.13 with sweeping item and rune changes

The Mobility Problem in League

Riot Games is implementing significant changes to League of Legends’ movement mechanics in Patch 11.13 to address the growing issue of mobility creep that has been affecting game balance.

The rapid increase in champion mobility has become a pressing concern, with new releases consistently featuring dash abilities and movement speed boosts. Riot’s development team has recognized this as a systemic issue requiring immediate attention.

Recent champion designs have heavily incorporated mobility tools, from Gwen’s Hallowed Mist dash to Lillia’s movement speed stacking passive. This trend has created an environment where positioning and skillshot accuracy have become increasingly difficult to balance.

The problem extends beyond individual champion kits, however. The Season 11 item overhaul introduced numerous movement-enhancing effects through items like Stridebreaker, Shurelya’s Battlesong, and Turbo Chemtank, further exacerbating the issue.

Key Mobility Changes

Patch 11.13 delivers comprehensive adjustments to movement mechanics through both direct nerfs and system-wide tweaks. Lead designer Mark ‘Scruffy’ Yetter emphasized these changes target both major outliers and subtle power creep.

Stridebreaker undergoes the most dramatic transformation, losing its 300-unit dash entirely. In its place, the item now provides a powerful slow effect (90% decaying to 40%) and can be used while moving. The Mythic passive movement speed bonus is reduced from 3% to 2% per legendary item.

Numerous other items see mobility reductions:

  • Galeforce: Dash cooldown increased from 60 to 90 seconds
  • Shurelya’s Battlesong: Move speed boost reduced from 60% decaying to 30% flat
  • Dead Man’s Plate: Maximum move speed reduced from 60 to 40
  • Cosmic Drive: Move speed per stack reduced from 5 (max 30) to 3 (max 18)
  • “We evaluated each item’s win rate when making these changes,” explained designer Jeevun Sidhu. “Some are buffs, some are nerfs, and some maintain neutral power levels while reducing mobility.”

    Gameplay Impact Analysis

These systemic changes will significantly alter how players approach engagements and positioning. Champions who relied on item-based mobility may need to adjust their playstyles, particularly in the top lane where Stridebreaker was dominant.

Pro Tip: With reduced mobility across items, champions with innate movement abilities (like Irelia or Yasuo) may see increased viability as their kits become relatively stronger.

Common Pitfall: Don’t overcommit to chasing kills expecting the same mobility from items. Many movement speed bonuses have been reduced by 30-50%.

Riot plans to monitor these changes before potentially adjusting champion mobility. “A champion-focused pass may come after we see how these system changes play out,” cautioned Yetter.
