Dallas Empire reveals gameplay reasons behind Huke’s benching amid player health discussions
The Shocking Benching Decision
The esports community was stunned when Dallas Empire, reigning 2020 Call of Duty League champions, removed star player Cuyler ‘Huke’ Garland from their active roster in April 2021. This unexpected move came despite Huke’s proven track record as one of the league’s top performers and his integral role in their championship victory.
After seven weeks of speculation, team owner Mike ‘hastr0’ Rufail and head coach Raymond ‘Rambo Ray’ Lussier finally addressed the controversial decision that rocked the competitive Call of Duty scene.
The April 23 roster change announcement came without explanation, leaving fans and analysts questioning why a championship-winning team would bench one of its most valuable players mid-season. This move set a precedent in CDL history for its unexpected nature and timing.
Huke’s Personal Revelations
The situation took a personal turn when Huke released a 30-minute documentary titled ‘My Story’ on June 9, revealing his private struggles with Adderall use and the accompanying mood swings. This brave disclosure shed light on the personal challenges many esports athletes face behind the scenes.
Dallas Empire management quickly clarified that their roster decision was unrelated to these health matters. “It was always only gameplay-related,” became the organization’s consistent message regarding the benching.
“We’re really proud of Cuyler for coming out and making the video that he did,” hastr0 stated in a Twitter video response. “There’s only happiness from our side that he’s actually speaking about these subjects.”
Team Management’s Perspective
Empire leadership emphasized their organizational values regarding player welfare. “Never in our history have we ever influenced a player to make unhealthy decisions,” hastr0 affirmed. “We’re always pushing our players to make the best decisions possible.”
The decision-making process was described as methodical and player-involved. Huke had been working with the team for over a month to address gameplay issues before the benching occurred, and was given two weeks’ advance notice of the potential roster change.
If I ever do a poor job of that, I will quit. I appreciate all of you who have supported my teams and cheered for us to reach our goals.

Competitive Considerations
Despite holding second place in league standings at the time, Empire’s coaching staff identified concerning trends. “We got to a point where things weren’t progressing, kind of almost regressing from a gameplay standpoint,” explained Rambo Ray.
The team’s championship aspirations drove the difficult choice. “Our goal every year is to win CoD Champs,” Rambo Ray stated. “This year that wasn’t the case for us” with the existing roster configuration.
