Apex Legends Fight Night Update: New Modes, Balance Changes, and Essential Tips
Fight Night Update Overview
Respawn Entertainment has unveiled the January 5 Fight Night update for Apex Legends, bringing substantial changes to the game’s meta and content offerings. This seasonal update introduces fresh gameplay experiences through new modes while addressing balance issues that have emerged in the current competitive landscape.
The Fight Night Collection Event marks a significant shift in Apex Legends’ gameplay dynamics, featuring temporary mode replacements, legend adjustments, and coveted cosmetic rewards that will be available until February 2, 2021.
New Features and Content
Airdrop Escalation Mode
Replacing the standard battle royale experience temporarily, Airdrop Escalation dramatically increases supply drop frequency, creating a high-octane gameplay variant where fully kitted squads become common by mid-game. Strategic players should prioritize positioning near drop zones while maintaining awareness of third-party opportunities.
Pathfinder Town Takeover
The robotic scout claims his own map territory with a boxing ring POI where firearms are disabled. This forced melee combat area rewards movement mastery and timing, with the central podium offering temporary shields to victorious fighters. Pro tip: Slide-jumping into punches extends your reach.
Gibraltar Heirloom
Completing the 24-item Fight Night collection rewards players with Gibraltar’s new heirloom weapon – a ceremonial war club. For collectors, note that this marks the first defensive legend to receive an heirloom, potentially indicating future support for underplayed characters.
Legend and Weapon Balancing
Legend Adjustments
Rampart receives a significant quality-of-life improvement with Amped Cover’s cooldown reduced from 30 to 20 seconds, enabling more aggressive defensive setups. Meanwhile, Horizon’s Gravity Lift sees a 5-second cooldown increase (16s → 21s), reducing her rotational dominance in competitive play.
Weapon Tweaks
The Hemlok’s damage reduction (22 → 20) and Mastiff’s spread adjustment aim to curb their dominance in mid-range engagements. Conversely, the Prowler’s reserve ammo buff (175 → 210) makes it more viable for extended fights. Weapon tier tip: The Prowler now pairs exceptionally well with a sniper loadout.
Quality of Life Improvements
The long-requested ‘Mark All As Seen’ button finally addresses menu notification fatigue, while the streamlined Ultimate Accelerant usage (no inventory opening required) significantly improves combat flow. New players should note the respawn beacon pinging adjustment – it now accounts for ring timing rather than just proximity.
Common mistake to avoid: Don’t waste Accelerants when your ultimate is already charged, as the automatic activation doesn’t check current status. Advanced players can exploit the new Trident interaction fixes to create unexpected rotation paths.
Detailed Patch Notes
- Amped Cover: Decreased cooldown from 30 seconds to 20 seconds
- Gravity Lift: Increased effective cooldown from 16 seconds to 21 seconds
- Decreased damage from 22 to 20.
- Spread out 3rd/4th pellets to decrease max range of 4 pellet hits (was +/- 7.5 degrees, now +/- 10)
- Reserve bullets increased from 175 to 210
In hopes of spreading out the chaos that can occur in final rings, we’re making some tweaks to Rings 5 and 6.
- Ring 5 is bigger (1500 unit radius to 2000 unit radius). Time to close is the same.
- Ring 6 is the last ring. It will slowly close over 100s somewhere near the center of Ring 5.
