Wild Rift 2.2a patch breakdown: Rammus arrives, champion balances, and strategic impacts
Patch Overview
Wild Rift’s mid-cycle update 2.2a delivers impactful changes despite its incremental version number. The patch introduces Rammus alongside substantial balance adjustments to three key champions: Diana, Pantheon, and Galio.
This update continues Riot’s accelerated content schedule following Wild Rift’s global expansion, now available in nearly all regions including the Americas since March 2021.
Building on patch 2.2’s foundation that introduced permanent Position Preference for ranked matches, this update focuses on champion balancing and quality-of-life improvements. The changes reflect Riot’s commitment to maintaining competitive integrity as the mobile MOBA’s player base grows.
Rammus: The Armordillo Arrives
After months of anticipation since his January 2021 announcement, Rammus makes his Wild Rift debut on April 22 with a refined kit. The Armordillo’s transition from PC includes significant ability modifications, particularly to his ultimate which received parallel upgrades in both game versions.
Strategic Insight: Rammus’ power spike timing differs from PC version – test his jungle clear speeds in Practice Mode before ranked play. His taunt duration scales differently in Wild Rift (3-4.5s vs PC’s fixed 1.25-2.25s), creating unique gank opportunities.
Players should note his Powerball (Q) self-slow duration reduction from 1.5s to 1s, significantly improving mobility during engagements. This change makes Rammus more forgiving for new players while maintaining his identity as a counter to attack-speed reliant champions.
Champion Balance Changes
Three champions receive focused attention in this patch, each addressing different balance concerns:
Diana Buffs
The Scorn of the Moon gains substantial quality-of-life improvements, with attack speed bonuses moved from Lunar Rush (E) to her passive. This change, combined with cooldown reductions across all abilities (Q: 10→9s max, W: 14→13s max), significantly improves her laning phase sustainability.
Pro Tip: Diana’s new passive attack speed (30-120% based on level) synergizes exceptionally well with Nashor’s Tooth – consider this core item in your build path.
Pantheon Adjustments
Following his successful 2.2 rework, Pantheon receives targeted damage increases to Comet Spear (Q), with both tap and charge damage rising from 55-190 to 70-190. The bonus AD ratio also improves from 100% to 110%, rewarding aggressive early game play.
Galio Nerfs
The Colossus sees multiple power reductions: Justice Punch (E) range decreases from 6.5 to 5.75, while his percent HP damage per AP ratio drops from 2% to 1.5%. These changes aim to curb his dominant presence in mid and support roles.
Additional changes affect multiple champions: Blitzcrank, Leona, and Tristana receive buffs, while Alistar, Corki, Dr. Mundo, Shyvana, and Vi face nerfs. Notably, Vi’s ultimate cooldown increases at all ranks (85→95s at level 1).
Detailed Patch Notes
Ability Changes
- Diana’s Moonfall (E) cooldown: 14s → 13/11.5/10/8.5s
- Pantheon’s Comet Spear bonus AD ratio: 100% → 110%
- Galio’s Justice Punch dash range: 6.5 → 5.75
System Adjustments
Turret Defenses
- Solo and Mid Lane outer turrets gain 90 bonus Armor/MR (first 4 minutes)
- Multi-champion defense scaling adjusted: 3 champions now trigger 250 Armor/MR (up from 100)
Common Mistake: Don’t overcommit to early dives – the increased turret defenses punish 3+ champion dives much harder than before. Coordinate with your jungler for safer tower pressure.
