TFT 12.17 brings Uncharted Realms mid-set update with new Dragons, traits, and major Dragon mechanic overhaul
Release Date and Global Rollout Schedule
Teamfight Tactics enthusiasts should mark their calendars for Thursday, September 8, 2022, when patch 12.17 officially deploys across all regions. This update represents the highly anticipated mid-set refresh for Dragonlands, bringing the Uncharted Realms expansion to the autobattler.
Server maintenance typically begins around 5 AM local time, with complete downtime lasting approximately three hours before servers reopen at 8 AM. The exact timing may vary slightly depending on your specific region and server infrastructure requirements.
Oceania servers traditionally receive the update first, with patch notes becoming available as the deployment commences in Australia. The global rollout then progresses systematically over the following 24 hours, ensuring all players worldwide can access the new content within a day of the initial release.
Pro Tip: Plan your practice sessions accordingly – the meta will evolve rapidly during the first 48 hours post-release as players experiment with the new units and mechanics.
Major Gameplay Evolution in Uncharted Realms
The Uncharted Realms mid-set update represents one of the most substantial gameplay shifts in recent TFT history. Riot Games has implemented sweeping changes that fundamentally alter how players approach team composition and strategy.
More than twenty new champions join the roster, including five additional Dragons that expand the namesake category from seven to twelve total options. Several problematic traits like Legend and Revel have been completely removed and replaced with innovative new mechanics including Darkflight and Lagoon. Additionally, over thirty new Draconic Augments provide fresh strategic pathways.
The most transformative change involves a complete overhaul of the Dragon mechanic. Instead of restricting players to a single Dragon per board, the system now encourages vertical Dragon compositions as a dedicated trait. The Dragon trait scales up to five activations, with each tier providing increasingly powerful bonuses to both your Dragons and entire team composition.
Treasure Dragon encounters have also received significant innovation. While the original Treasure Dragon remains available 40% of the time, two new variants now appear in the remaining games. The Order Treasure Dragon guarantees premium loot including Radiant items and substantial gold reserves, while the Chaos Treasure Dragon offers more variable outcomes that can range from exceptional to mediocre rewards.
Strategic Insight: The new Dragon trait scaling means committing to multiple Dragons early can yield massive late-game power spikes, but requires careful economic management to afford the expensive units.
Champion Balance Adjustments and Updates
Patch 12.17 introduces comprehensive balance changes affecting champions across all cost tiers and stages of the game. These adjustments aim to create healthier power progression and more diverse viable compositions.
Early Game Adjustments: Several one and two-cost units receive targeted buffs to improve their early game viability. Ezreal’s Mystic Shot damage increases at two and three-star levels (250/325 → 275/375), while multiple champions including Senna and Sett receive Attack Damage increases to strengthen their early board presence.
Mid-Game Refinements: Three and four-cost units see nuanced changes to improve balance. Gnar gains bonus Attack Damage in Mega form (50/80/150 → 60/90/150), while Lee Sin receives mechanical adjustments including Magic Resist shred on Dragon’s Rage and reduced stun duration but lower damage.
Dragon Champion Overhauls: Multiple Dragon units undergo significant changes. Daeja receives a complete rework removing physical damage from auto-attacks while increasing magic damage from passive barrages. Shyvana transforms from a three-cost to four-cost Dragon with substantially reworked abilities. Ao Shin and Aurelion Sol see notable stat reductions to balance their late-game impact.

Multiple augments see tier adjustments and component changes to improve their power level appropriateness.
Item Reworks: Frozen Heart transforms into Protector’s Vow, providing bonus starting mana and a conditional shield for nearby allies. Runaan’s Hurricane undergoes a mechanical change where bolt damage is now considered item damage, preventing critical strikes and omnivamp interactions. Multiple Radiant items receive stat adjustments to balance their power levels.
System Improvements: The Golden Egg hatch timer reduces from 11 to 10 turns, and the transition from Stage 4-7 to 5-1 no longer counts toward the timer. The Mimic’s Veil augment receives a complete rework, now spawning clones during planning phase that can be positioned strategically.
