Riot gives League of Legends’ top lane love in Season 13 overhaul

Top lane transforms into League’s resource powerhouse with strategic XP, gold, and item overhaul for Season 13 dominance

The Top Lane Renaissance: From Isolation to Dominance

League of Legends Season 13 delivers transformative changes specifically targeting the top lane position, fundamentally reshaping how this isolated role impacts the broader game. Previously considered the ‘island’ of Summoner’s Rift, top lane now receives substantial buffs to gold acquisition, experience gains, and item diversity that collectively elevate its strategic importance.

“Top lane has been struggling significantly” according to Riot’s assessment, prompting the development team to implement sweeping Season 13 modifications. Comprehensive adjustments to itemization, economic systems, and experience distribution will establish the lengthy top lane as a central strategic battleground.

The community has long joked about top lane’s marginalized position within the League meta. Successive system changes, including fortified turret defenses preventing lane swaps and recent Teleport alterations, effectively isolated top laners on their section of the map with limited game-wide influence.

Riot Games has consistently committed to revitalizing this role. Previous item updates provided some meta diversity for tank and fighter champions, while champion reworks attempted to increase top lane popularity. Neither approach delivered sustainable long-term solutions for the role’s fundamental issues.

Season 13 introduces a paradigm shift, positioning top lane as the primary focal point of Summoner’s Rift strategy. These targeted modifications aim to make the role more engaging to play while significantly increasing its in-game impact, potentially making top laners the economic powerhouses of their teams.

Resource Distribution Overhaul: XP and Gold Mechanics

The most significant top lane modification establishes it as League of Legends’ highest-resource position for Season 13. Rather than suffering isolation without compensation, Riot is rebalancing gold and experience distribution across lanes to make top lane dominant in both economic categories.

This represents a dual-pronged approach. Developers are implementing additional nerfs to duo and shared experience while simultaneously boosting solo lane experience, adjusting level progression thresholds throughout the game. To counterbalance mid lane benefits from these changes, minions spawning in the middle lane now provide reduced gold value before the 14-minute mark.

League of Legends devs confirm “heavy handed” lane swap changes but are they going too far?

“Top lane has been underperforming somewhat and the role specifically lost distinctive characteristics, particularly following teleport adjustments,” explained lead designer Matthew Leung-Harrison. “We believe the teleport changes benefited overall game health but top lane absorbed disproportionate negative consequences.

“We sought to identify a distinctive advantage for top laners to celebrate from a design perspective, and this involved making top lane the maximum XP and maximum gold champion location. The resulting adjustments mean solo laners will gain additional experience, and to equilibrate mid versus top lane, we needed to slightly decrease gold allocation to mid laners.

“Long-term this should result in top laners experiencing improved rewards for playing in the extended lane as solitary players compared to operating solo in the mid lane which offers substantially greater safety.”

Strategic Tip: Maximize your advantage by perfecting wave management techniques. Slow pushing before objectives allows you to accumulate massive minion waves that crash during dragon or herald fights, forcing your opponent to choose between losing CS or helping their team.

Item System Revolution: Tank and Fighter Build Paths

The secondary update focuses on League of Legends’ itemization ecosystem, providing tanks and fighters in the top lane with expanded options for Season 13.

New Mythic items such as Icathia’s Endurance, Goliath’s Ascendiary, and Radiant Virtue will enable higher-resource champions — including top laners with their enhanced gold and experience — to exert greater influence in teamfight scenarios. Sunfire Aegis and Turbo Chemtank are being demoted to Legendary status, reflecting a philosophical shift in Riot’s approach to build sequencing.

“Typically we anticipate players selecting Sunfire or Frostfire [Gauntlet] as primary armor items, while those prioritizing magic resistance would choose Abyssal Mask or Spirit Visage,” Leung-Harrison stated.

“We’re experimenting to determine whether this ‘first item mythic avoidance’ approach will prove effective for tanks while maintaining flexibility for players preferring immediate mythic acquisition.”

AP-focused champions receive substantial attention: Rod of Ages makes a dramatic comeback. This scaling AP item for battlemages returns with its traditional 10-minute passive, but now upon achieving maximum stacks players receive an additional champion level. This positions it as an excellent Mythic selection for Ryze and Kayle who prioritize late-game scaling.

Fighter champions also gain additional flexibility with Spear of Shojin’s reintroduction as a “chase” Legendary item providing substantial Ability Haste and Movement Speed enhancements, while Ravenous Hydra now incorporates an inherent stacking mechanism reminiscent of the original Sword of the Occult, accumulating Attack Damage and Omnivamp with each enemy elimination.

Common Mistake to Avoid: Don’t automatically build your Mythic item first on tanks. The new philosophy encourages building legendary resistance items (Sunfire, Spirit Visage) before your Mythic for better early-game durability and cost efficiency.

Advanced Optimization: For fighters, consider Spear of Shojin as a second or third item on champions like Fiora and Riven. The movement speed and ability haste synergize perfectly with your newfound resource advantage, allowing more frequent ability usage in extended trades.

Advanced Top Lane Strategies and Common Pitfalls

With top lane becoming the resource centerpiece of Season 13, players must adapt their strategic approach to maximize these advantages while avoiding common mistakes that could negate their economic lead.

Wave Management Mastery: Your increased gold and experience means proper wave control becomes even more critical. Learn to set up slow pushes toward opposite objectives, forcing your opponent to choose between defending their tower or participating in team fights. The 14-minute mid lane gold reduction means your lane’s minions are now more valuable – don’t let them go to waste.

Teleport Timing: Despite the previous teleport changes, your summoner spell choice remains crucial. With top lane’s increased importance, consider taking teleport for cross-map plays or ignite for lane dominance. Time your teleports carefully around objective spawns to convert your individual advantage into team-wide benefits.

Itemization Pitfalls: The temptation to immediately purchase expensive Mythic items can backfire. On tanks, prioritize cost-effective legendary items first unless your champion has specific Mythic synergies. For fighters, don’t overlook the value of early defensive components – your resource advantage means nothing if you get burst down in teamfights.

Teamfight Positioning: As a resource-rich top laner, you’ll be expected to carry teamfights. Tanks should focus on creating space and absorbing damage, while fighters need to identify priority targets. Remember that your increased levels mean you’ll reach power spikes earlier – coordinate with your jungler to secure Herald and convert it into early tower gold.

These comprehensive modifications launch alongside League of Legends Season 13 in mid-November.
