Riot Games expands League of Legends infrastructure in MENA with Arabic localization and Esports World Cup participation
MENA Infrastructure Overhaul
Riot Games has committed to a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade for the Middle East and North Africa region, featuring dedicated server deployment and complete Arabic language integration for League of Legends.
The development team confirmed that regional servers will significantly reduce latency issues that have historically plagued MENA players, who previously had to connect to European servers with suboptimal ping times ranging from 80-150ms. This technical enhancement represents Riot’s most substantial infrastructure investment in the region to date.
Arabic localization efforts, initially promised in 2019, have faced complex technical hurdles including complete interface re-engineering for right-to-left text rendering and culturally appropriate champion voiceover adaptations. The localization team has worked extensively with regional linguistic experts to ensure translations maintain gameplay clarity while respecting cultural nuances.
Riot’s statement emphasized: “While our Dubai publishing office has operated since 2018, we recognize that game-specific infrastructure has lagged behind player expectations. The forthcoming summer update will finally deliver the seamless experience MENA players deserve, with server stability matching global standards.”
Esports World Cup Participation
Competitive gaming in MENA receives a significant boost with League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics confirmation for the Esports World Cup, though Riot clarified their role remains limited to participation rather than event management.
The decision to include these titles in the Saudi Arabia-based tournament followed extensive evaluation of competitive calendar implications and regional player development opportunities. Riot emphasized this strategic move aims to provide MENA-based professional players with enhanced visibility and competitive pathways previously unavailable in the region.
“We anticipate questions regarding our participation in international events within the region,” Riot noted. “Our evaluation prioritized creating meaningful competitive opportunities for regional talent while maintaining our commitment to global esports integrity. The Esports World Cup represents a calculated step toward bridging the competitive gap between established and emerging regions.”

Regional Support Enhancement
Historical analysis reveals MENA has consistently received fragmented support compared to mature gaming regions, with infrastructure investments lagging behind player population growth. Riot’s latest initiatives aim to rectify this imbalance through coordinated technical and community development.
The regional enhancement strategy extends beyond technical infrastructure to encompass community building, esports ecosystem development, and localized content creation. Riot’s Dubai office will expand its staffing and resources to support these initiatives, focusing on cultivating homegrown competitive talent and strengthening regional tournament circuits.
Riot concluded: “Our calendar adjustment for the Esports World Cup reflects our dual commitment to exploring commercial opportunities for professional teams while delivering tangible benefits to MENA players. This regional focus represents a new chapter in our global development strategy.”
