Statistics reveal a stark contrast in play patterns: while 57.6% of solo queue games feature bot lane Lucian, pro players have only selected this position in 8.98% of matches (22/245 games in 2021). Mid lane dominates pro play with an 80.4% presence rate, compared to just 34.6% in ranked matches across all tiers.
Riot’s Balancing Strategy
Riot’s design team, led by Jeevun Sidhu, has outlined a clear direction for Lucian’s evolution. The planned changes for Patch 11.13 involve a calculated trade-off: reduced base stats and early-game power will be compensated by new mechanics that reward coordinated play with supports.
“We’re implementing bot lane bindings through two key mechanisms,” Sidhu explained. “First, Lucian gains empowerments when healed or shielded by allies. Second, we’re testing bonus damage against immobilized targets, creating natural synergy with engage supports like Leona and Alistar.”
These changes aim to preserve Lucian’s core identity while making him less viable in solo lanes. The healing/shielding interaction particularly encourages pairing with enchanters like Nami or Janna, while the CC bonus maintains viability with traditional engage supports.
Practical Implications
For players adapting to these changes, understanding optimal support pairings will be crucial. Enchanters like Lulu can maximize the healing/shielding bonuses, while tank supports like Nautilus can trigger the immobilization effects. Avoid picking Lucian with mage supports who offer neither benefit.
Common mistakes to watch for include overextending in early laning (due to reduced base stats) and failing to coordinate with your support’s cooldowns. Advanced players should practice animation canceling to maximize damage during brief CC windows.
While these changes aren’t yet on the PBE for testing, players can prepare by practicing bot lane matchups and support synergies. The tentative live date for Patch 11.13 is June 23, but as Sidhu cautioned, “We can’t guarantee that any of this makes it to live” in its current form.
