The current map pool blends dedicated Arenas locations (Party Crasher and Phase Runner) with modified Battle Royale POIs (Artillery Battery, Thermal Station, Golden Gardens), each offering distinct tactical opportunities.

Player Requests vs Design Reality

Community feedback has consistently requested smaller maps for faster engagements, with suggestions like replacing Artillery Battery with Octane’s more compact Gauntlet location.

Lead Designer Daniel Klein countered these requests, explaining: “Effective Arenas maps require multiple interconnected POIs with clear sightlines. While Gauntlet has interesting elements, its verticality creates sight blockages and lacks the spatial diversity needed for strategic play.”

Game designer David Bocek elaborated on their testing process: “Through extensive prototyping, we found small maps quickly became repetitive. The ideal balance gives teams space to make meaningful decisions about rotations, loadouts, and resource control between multiple combat zones.”

Strategic Considerations

Respawn’s design philosophy emphasizes creating “decision-rich” environments where player choices matter throughout a match.

Proper POI spacing (approximately 15-20 seconds rotation time) allows for:

  • Strategic positioning based on enemy movements
  • Meaningful loadout specialization (sniping vs CQC weapons)
  • Resource management between health bins and material stations

Compact maps collapse these strategic layers, making matches feel predetermined by initial engagements rather than developing dynamically.

Future Possibilities

While current design constraints limit ultra-compact maps, Respawn remains open to adjusted sizes that maintain strategic depth.

Potential solutions might include:

  • Asymmetrical map designs favoring different playstyles
  • Dynamic elements that modify spaces between rounds
  • Hybrid layouts with both tight corridors and open sightlines

As Bocek noted, the team continues experimenting to expand the mode’s tactical possibilities without sacrificing what makes Arenas uniquely engaging.
