Respawn cracks down on Apex Legends DDoS cheaters with new ban wave
The DDoS Problem in Apex Legends Ranked
Respawn Entertainment has intensified efforts to combat a growing epidemic of DDoS attacks plaguing Apex Legends’ competitive ranked matches. These malicious attacks disrupt server connections, forcing opponents to experience severe lag or complete disconnections.
The battle royale’s ranked mode has become a prime target for DDoS abusers seeking easy wins and inflated kill counts by artificially creating unplayable conditions for their opponents.
While Apex Legends has faced various cheating methods like aimbots and wallhacks, DDoS attacks present unique challenges. These network-based attacks don’t require modifying game files, making them harder to detect through traditional anti-cheat systems.
Recent months have seen two primary DDoS attack patterns: lobby-wide disruptions at match start that freeze all players except the attackers, and targeted attacks triggered when opponents engage the cheating team in combat.
Respawn’s Anti-Cheat Response
Respawn’s security team, led by Conor Ford (RSPN_Hideouts), has implemented new detection methods to identify DDoS activity. The team analyzes network traffic patterns and player reports to pinpoint offenders.
On March 22, Ford announced via Twitter: “Console reckoning for DDoSers and DDoS customers incoming. You can’t hide any of it ♥️”

This follows Respawn’s recent success in banning nearly 1,000 high-ranked cheaters through their anti-cheat initiatives. While exact numbers from the current DDoS ban wave remain undisclosed, community reports suggest significant impact.
Protecting Yourself from DDoS Attacks
While Respawn works on technical solutions, players can take proactive measures:
- Use wired internet connections instead of WiFi for more stable networking
- Enable VPN services to mask your IP address from potential attackers
- Report suspicious matches through Apex Legends’ in-game reporting system
- Monitor network activity during matches for unusual spikes
The security team encourages players to submit video evidence of suspected DDoS attacks through official channels. Genuine reports help improve detection algorithms and prioritize enforcement actions.
