Razleplasm’s journey through LoL esports and advocating for diversity in gaming
Introduction: Breaking barriers in esports
During Black History Month, we had an enlightening conversation with LCS caster Razleplasm about diversity in competitive League of Legends.
Barento ‘Razleplasm’ Mohammed, one of League’s most recognizable voices, shared his perspective on representation in esports with Dexerto. His journey exemplifies how passion can overcome barriers in competitive gaming.
While competitive gaming often appears dominated by a specific demographic, Razleplasm’s story demonstrates the changing face of esports. Many players and fans come from diverse backgrounds, yet this diversity isn’t always reflected in broadcast teams or professional player rosters.
From player to caster: Razleplasm’s rise in League of Legends
Razleplasm’s path to becoming an LCS caster mirrors many players’ experiences. “It began casually, playing with friends,” he recalls. “I watched streams to improve, which naturally led to enjoying competitive matches—first in NA, then EU, and eventually Chinese League of Legends.”
This passion evolved into participation on the China Talk podcast, marking the start of his esports career. Razleplasm’s journey included coaching top-tier teams like Dignitas Europe before finding his calling in casting. “I never expected it to become a career,” he admits. “Each opportunity led to another in ways I couldn’t predict.”
Navigating esports as a person of color
As one of few prominent people of color in League broadcasting, Razleplasm acknowledges both progress and challenges. Professionally, he’s felt respected by colleagues, but online anonymity brings different experiences. “You’ll get racist messages,” he states matter-of-factly. “The volume depends on visibility—bigger events mean more exposure to negativity.”
Razleplasm developed resilience through years of gaming. “In SOCOM, voice chat revealed my race immediately,” he shares. “I learned not to give trolls the satisfaction of reacting. If racism is their first insult, they’ve run out of material.”
His approach focuses on perspective: “Value positive interactions more than negative ones. The community has far more supporters than detractors.”
The state of representation in competitive gaming
League esports faces ongoing criticism regarding diversity in its talent pools. Razleplasm acknowledges the LCS broadcast’s current diversity while advocating for more inclusion. “We need more voices at the table,” he says, recalling the difficulty finding female candidates after Froskurinn’s departure.
“The issue runs deeper than hiring,” he explains. “We must make esports more welcoming at all levels, starting with amateur scenes. Open, friendly communities encourage diverse participation.”
Passion and positivity: Keys to success in esports
Razleplasm’s ultimate advice centers on passion. “Love what you do—it’s armor against negativity,” he emphasizes. “Nobody can take away your dedication. Focus on positive feedback from peers and fans; that’s the community’s true character.”
His journey from player to respected caster inspires aspiring esports professionals, especially those from underrepresented groups. Razleplasm proves that talent and perseverance can overcome barriers in competitive gaming.
