NHL 24’s revolutionary Exhaust Engine, expanded crossplay, and new game modes transform hockey gaming experience
NHL 24’s Exhaust Engine: A Game-Changing Innovation
Dexerto secured exclusive interviews with senior NHL 24 developers to explore this year’s groundbreaking gameplay transformations and feature enhancements.
Following NHL 23’s challenging release, EA Sports aims for redemption with NHL 24. Our exclusive discussions with development leads reveal strategic improvements across multiple game systems.
The second year utilizing Frostbite engine technology presented significant hurdles. NHL 23 faced widespread criticism due to gameplay inconsistencies and limited meaningful content updates.
Building from NHL 23’s rocky foundation, EA Sports implements strategic corrections focusing on Hockey Ultimate Team mechanics and core gameplay dynamics—we provide insider perspectives on community expectations.
Our conversations with EA NHL Senior Creative Director Mike Englehart and NHL Senior Producer Chris Haluke covered revolutionary gameplay systems, HUT innovations, and potential revivals of fan-favorite modes.
The Exhaust Engine represents NHL 24’s most significant gameplay evolution. This sophisticated system fundamentally alters offensive strategies and establishes fresh competitive dynamics.
Essentially, the Exhaust Engine incentivizes prolonged offensive zone presence through tactical advantages. Attackers gain progressive bonuses during sustained pressure situations, while defenders must strategically manage energy depletion. Visual stamina indicators provide real-time player condition feedback.
Senior Creative Director Mike Englehart views these innovations as essential franchise revitalization measures.
“This year focused heavily on community engagement and identifying transformative opportunities. We asked: where can we inject fresh energy? Where can we deliver truly novel experiences? Gameplay evolution had stagnated significantly in recent iterations,” Englehart explained to Dexerto.

NHL 24 review: A clunky skate on the ice
Offensive squads accumulate Sustained Pressure metrics—visually represented on-ice—through consistent puck control, shooting opportunities, and physical engagements within attacking zones. Achieving sufficient offensive dominance triggers “Adrenaline Effects,” enhancing passing velocity and precision for thirty-second intervals.
Defensive units encounter Pinned Effects, impairing skating effectiveness until successful five-second zone clears reset conditions.
Goaltender fatigue introduces additional Exhaust Engine complexity. Netminders experience performance degradation during extended defensive sequences but, according to Englehart, “experience spectacular moments” through fifty-plus new desperation save animations.
These integrated systems promise enhanced shot quality recognition across diverse scenarios and more equitable gameplay balance.
“We’re confident in delivering balanced gameplay that generates compelling repetition through varied match outcomes. Each game should feel uniquely engaging,” Engelhart emphasized.
Crossplay Expansion and Future Economy Plans
Last year’s crossplay introduction featured limited functionality. NHL 24 expands World of CHEL social features to include cross-platform friend invitations and club roster additions.
Regarding feature expansion, Englehart noted production timeline constraints prevented comprehensive crossplay implementation previously.
“Resource allocation necessitated phased implementation. We committed initially to cross-platform matchmaking with promises of completing the ecosystem this cycle—mission accomplished.”
However, cross-economy functionality for Hockey Ultimate Team remains absent. Englehart confirmed ongoing investigation into this complex feature.
“Cross-economy integration remains under active consideration. Our cross-play vision encompasses unified leaderboards and economic systems—this objective remains prioritized.”
HUT Moments and CHEL Customization Evolution
HUT Moments introduces historical recreation challenges, tasking players with replicating iconic NHL historical scenarios.
While reminiscent of PS3/Xbox 360-era Live Moments, Senior Producer Chris Haluke emphasizes fundamental reimagining rather than simple recreation.
“This isn’t nostalgia-driven reimplementation. We’re completely rethinking the concept for contemporary expectations. Future-focused reimagination guides all our development decisions.”
Regarding content updates, Englehart confirmed live team support for additional Moments content.
“Live team integration enables real-time incorporation of current season highlights. This responsive approach addresses community demand for relevant content.”
CHEL undergoes significant customization overhaul, eliminating random reward bags in favor of earned currency systems targeting specific vanity items.
World of CHEL introduces complimentary and premium Battle Passes delivering supplementary rewards.
Discussing reward certainty, Englehart referenced anecdotal frustration from Ducks fans unable to acquire team-specific headwear through random distribution.
“Endless bag openings frustrated players seeking specific items. Market evolution demands predictable rewards. Time investment should guarantee desired outcomes.”
Most NHL 24 cosmetic acquisitions will persist through future franchise iterations.
Future Mode Development and Community Engagement
Nearly ten years have passed since online franchise functionality (formerly GM Connected) appeared in current-generation NHL titles. Englehart confirmed neither online General Manager nor career modes feature in NHL 24, though GM Connected revival remains under consideration.
“Chris Haluke and I aggressively pursue community-requested features. We’ve intensified community engagement efforts this cycle—major requested features receive serious development discussion.”
NHL 24 launches October 6 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
