The era of Moonstaff dominance is coming to an end with League of Legends patch 11.8, as Riot Games implements substantial nerfs to both Moonstone Renewer and Staff of Flowing Water.
This powerful item combination has defined the support meta throughout Season 11, but the upcoming changes aim to restore balance to the game’s item ecosystem.
The movement speed meta that emerged after the item rework will see significant adjustments. While Turbo Chemtank remains unchanged, the other movement-focused items are being rebalanced to reduce their overwhelming presence in matches.
These changes particularly affect champions like Lillia and Nidalee who could flex the Moonstaff build across multiple roles. The combo’s incredible value at just 4,800 gold made it a must-build for many AP champions, regardless of their primary role.
The Staff of Flowing Water undergoes the most dramatic transformation, losing its 15% movement speed bonus when healing or shielding allies. In its place comes 20 Ability Haste – a valuable stat that doesn’t provide the same rotational power as the speed boost.
Moonstone Renewer receives parallel adjustments, with its Starlit Grace heal reduced to a flat 60 health (down from scaling values) and the maximum bonus healing percentage cut from 50% to 20%. The Mythic passive now grants 10 additional healing per Legendary item instead of 5 Ability Haste.
Shurelya’s Battlesong Adjustments
As Riot Games phases out the Moonstaff combo, they’re simultaneously reworking Shurelya’s Battlesong to potentially fill the movement-speed support niche.
The item’s Mythic passive now grants Ability Haste instead of movement speed, but introduces a new mechanic called Motivate. This passive triggers when you empower or protect an ally, granting 25% decaying movement speed for 1.5 seconds (with a 4-second cooldown).
While not as consistently powerful as the old Moonstaff combo, this change creates interesting new gameplay dynamics. The movement speed becomes more situational rather than constant, rewarding precise timing of abilities.
Enchanter supports will need to adapt their playstyle to maximize the new Shurelya’s effectiveness. The item may particularly shine on champions with spammable shields or heals that can regularly trigger the Motivate passive.
Strategic Implications and Adaptations
These sweeping item changes will require players to fundamentally rethink their approach to support and AP champion builds.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- Continuing to build Moonstaff out of habit – the combo’s effectiveness is dramatically reduced
