League of Legends patch 11.9 notes: Vladimir & Hecarim nerfs, Kog’Maw update

League of Legends Patch 11.9 Breakdown: Champion Nerfs, Item Changes, and New Skins

Introduction

The April 28 update brings significant changes to League of Legends as Patch 11.9 arrives just in time for the Mid-Season Invitational. This substantial update targets champion balance, item effectiveness, and introduces commemorative skins while implementing crucial quality-of-life improvements.

Riot Games has specifically designed these changes to diversify the professional meta for MSI 2021 while addressing overpowered champions in solo queue. Vladimir and Hecarim lead the nerf list, while Kog’Maw receives long-awaited visual upgrades.

Champion Balance Changes

Hecarim’s adjustments aim to reduce the dominance of tank builds while preserving his viability as a damage dealer. As lead developer Mark “Scruffy” Yetter explained: “We’re shifting Hecarim’s power to make tank builds deal notably less damage while maintaining tankiness, creating space for viable damage-oriented builds.”

Vladimir’s nerfs target his overwhelming presence in both professional and high-level solo queue play. The changes reduce his early game safety while maintaining his late-game hypercarry potential.

Several champions received compensatory buffs, including:

  • Kindred: Improved jungle clear and scaling
  • Shen: Better lane presence with reduced energy costs
  • Kog’Maw: Visual updates for better ability clarity

Item Adjustments

Turbo Chemtank and Deadman’s Plate receive targeted nerfs to reduce the overwhelming power of tanky engage champions. These changes particularly affect junglers who could previously engage with impunity.

Conversely, several items received minor buffs:

  • Moonstone Renewer: Improved healing output
  • Death’s Dance: Better anti-burst potential
  • Wit’s End: More consistent damage output

These adjustments aim to create more diverse build paths rather than completely shifting the meta.

New Skins Release

Patch 11.9 introduces two skin lines celebrating competitive League of Legends:

  1. Conqueror Jax (1350 RP) – Honors the Mid-Season Invitational
  2. Damwon Gaming Worlds 2020 skins (1350 RP each) – Commemorates their championship victory

The Damwon skins feature their signature blue and white colors across five champions:

  • Nidalee
  • Kennen
  • Twisted Fate
  • Jhin
  • Leona

Gameplay Improvements

Several quality-of-life improvements enhance the player experience:

  • Shop interface upgrades for better item set management
  • Mythic item purchase logic improvements
  • Ornn item visibility when he’s on your team

Notable bug fixes include:

  • Viego interactions with Kindred and Shyvana
  • Kled transformation issues
  • Omnivamp stat display accuracy
