Season 11 Launch: Key Champion Buffs, Item Changes, and Competitive Updates
Season 11 Launch Overview
League of Legends enters its eleventh competitive season with patch 11.1, bringing substantial changes to both champion balance and the recently overhauled item system. This update serves as the final tuning before the official ranked season begins on January 8, following an extended preseason period that allowed players to adapt to the massive item rework.
The first update of 2021 focuses on refining the preseason changes, with particular attention to top lane balance through adjustments to Gnar and Pantheon, along with systemic changes to address excessive burst damage from items.
After the holiday break, Riot Games returns with crucial balance updates that will shape the competitive landscape for months to come. The meta has remained unstable since the introduction of new items in patch 10.25, with certain champions like Katarina, Malphite, and Ivern benefiting disproportionately from the changes.
Champion-Specific Updates
Gnar emerges as one of the biggest winners in this patch, receiving comprehensive buffs to both his Mega and Mini forms. These changes address his underwhelming performance following the item rework, particularly enhancing his Mega form’s combat effectiveness while providing quality-of-life improvements to his Mini form.
Pantheon continues his rollercoaster ride through the balance changes, with Riot targeting his top lane sustain after successfully eliminating his support viability in previous patches. These adjustments aim to maintain his identity as a strong early-game champion while reducing his oppressive lane presence.
Beyond these top lane changes, the patch includes adjustments to 14 other champions. Fiddlesticks and Master Yi face nerfs to their jungle dominance, while Karma, Qiyana, Ryze, Xayah, Yasuo, and Yone receive buffs to improve their competitive viability.
Item System Rebalancing
Riot addresses one of the most common complaints about Season 11 items—their excessive burst potential. The developers are shifting power from item actives to more sustained stats, ensuring champions scale based on their abilities rather than their builds.
Seven key items receive adjustments: Duskblade of Draktharr, Prowler’s Claw, Hextech Rocketbelt, Night Harvester, Trinity Force, Goredrinker, and Stridebreaker. These changes aim to reduce their burst potential while maintaining their core identities. Additionally, Runaan’s Hurricane sees its long-awaited changes implemented, and Shurelya’s Battlesong gets buffed to better support its intended users.
For players building Tear items, significant changes affect Archangel’s Staff and Muramana. The adjustments include modified build paths, stat adjustments, and functionality changes that impact how these items perform across different champion types.
Competitive Play Updates
The ranked season introduces new requirements for reaching Grandmaster and Challenger tiers. Players must now accumulate at least 200 LP in Master to promote to Grandmaster, and 500 LP in Grandmaster to reach Challenger. These changes create a more structured progression system while maintaining the prestige of the highest ranks.
Lead developer Mark Yetter confirmed six champions will receive Day 1 hotfixes not included in the official patch notes. These include buffs to Sivir and Varus, along with nerfs to Graves, Malphite, Ivern, and Taliyah—addressing immediate balance concerns before the season begins.
The patch also includes numerous bug fixes addressing issues with champion abilities and item interactions, ensuring smoother gameplay as players begin their Season 11 ranked journeys.
