WoW devs Ana Resendez & Clayton Stone on PvP, talents & class changes in Season of Discovery

Insider guide to WoW Season of Discovery’s revolutionary class changes, PvP innovations, and faction balance systems

Revolutionizing Classic: The Season of Discovery Vision

Dexerto conducted an exclusive interview with World of Warcraft Classic’s development leadership team, featuring Associate Production Director Clayton Stone and Lead Software Engineer Ana Resendez, to explore the groundbreaking Season of Discovery launching November 30.

World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery represents Blizzard’s ambitious response to years of community requests for Classic+, bringing transformative changes while preserving the authentic Azeroth experience.

For players unfamiliar with this innovative approach, Season of Discovery emerged from BlizzCon announcements as the evolution of Classic gameplay. The cornerstone innovation is the Rune Engraving system, allowing players to unlock and assign powerful new abilities across three armor slots, fundamentally altering class capabilities while maintaining the original game’s soul.

Complementing these power enhancements are completely new gameplay experiences, including a reimagined 10-player raid version of the beloved Blackfathom Depths dungeon. The progression system features staggered level caps starting at 25, then advancing through 40 and 50 before reaching the traditional level 60 endpoint.

“Season of Discovery represents our second seasonal iteration, and the development team is incredibly enthusiastic about delivering this experience to our dedicated community,” explained Ana Resendez. “Our creative direction stemmed from re-examining what Classic represents within the broader Warcraft universe.”

“A central design principle ensures Azeroth remains the primary narrative focus. We’re exploring familiar locations while introducing unexpected twists that maintain the world’s integrity. Our inspiration continuously returns to the core question: What defines Classic for our team, and which unexplored directions should we pursue next?”

The development team drew significant inspiration from Classic Beta testing, where level-banded content at level 30 demonstrated remarkable success. This approach generated emergent gameplay metas as players explored optimal gear combinations and character optimization strategies at specific level thresholds. “We recognized the tremendous potential in translating that experimental energy into our new season while substantially expanding the concept,” Resendez noted.

Beyond providing fresh perspectives on the leveling experience, Season of Discovery introduces strategic complexity through additional progression layers, creating unprecedented gameplay opportunities within established timeframes.

Clayton Stone emphasized community collaboration: “Ana perfectly captured our vision. Player feedback has been instrumental throughout Classic’s evolution. As we concluded our previous season and planned future directions, we recognized the incremental innovations from last season’s content variations and leveling adjustments. The community consistently requests class enhancements, new content experiences, and all innovations grounded in authentic Azeroth.”

“Season of Discovery represents our comprehensive response to these community desires, executed within a seasonal framework that enables bold experimental approaches. Our class design innovations particularly benefit from this flexibility, allowing us to monitor player responses and preferences. We’re tremendously excited for launch and anticipate significant community engagement.”

Class Revolution: Rune Engraving and Role Flexibility

Regarding class balance adjustments, Resendez provided clarity: “The immediate answer is no significant changes are planned. While we cannot completely rule out minor adjustments for unforeseen interactions, current designs remain stable. The primary enjoyment will emerge from exploring new class roles through the Rune system itself.”

“As previously mentioned, our seasonal philosophy prioritizes fun balance. We’re committed to ensuring every class possesses abilities that generate excitement and engagement. This principle guides our approach to role and class development direction.”

The development team highlighted revolutionary role expansions, including Rogue and Warlock tanking capabilities. However, these innovations differ dramatically from modern WoW’s specialization systems. “Rather than the game dictating ‘now you can tank – choose this specialization,’ we’ve implemented systems where specific Rune combinations enable role exploration,” Resendez explained. “Players maintain autonomy in combining Runes to create their preferred gameplay experiences, encouraging extensive experimentation with new ability combinations.”

Stone addressed balance concerns: “This represents an area requiring careful attention. Observant players have already noticed pre-launch class adjustments. While fun remains our primary balance objective, we recognize when certain classes become excessively powerful. We aim to prevent situations where players can effortlessly complete content without engagement.”

“Players should anticipate class adjustments addressing significant imbalances. Post-launch assessment will determine necessary changes. Our team possesses extensive class balancing expertise, even with new Rune abilities, and can implement rapid adjustments when required. However, we don’t anticipate weekly balance patches – expect targeted, meaningful changes.”

Resendez elaborated on balancing methodology: “The development team has thoroughly investigated balancing new abilities alongside existing Classic capabilities. Observing our designers employ mathematical modeling combined with internal feedback has been fascinating. Open world adjustments will definitely balance difficulty levels against players’ enhanced capabilities from new abilities.”

Stone described the challenge: “Balancing becomes complex when classes achieve significantly increased damage output through Rune acquisition. We avoid simply inflating enemy health pools to create damage sponges, but simultaneously prevent enemies from dying instantaneously. Opportunities exist to enhance enemy damage output and moderately increase health without creating frustrating gameplay. Our design team maintains vigilant oversight of this delicate balance.”

Class Optimization Strategy

For maximum effectiveness, prioritize Runes that complement your preferred playstyle rather than chasing meta builds. Experiment with unconventional combinations – some of the most powerful synergies emerge from unexpected Rune interactions. Remember that role flexibility means your class might excel in areas previously unavailable.

Progression Reimagined: Level Bands and Content Unlocks

Regarding Shaman class developments, Stone indicated: “This topic has generated substantial team discussion and community feedback. While we cannot provide specific details today, readers should know we’re actively investigating Shaman enhancements. Expect additional Shaman information in the near future.”

Resendez discussed endgame content: “The team currently evaluates Season of Mastery mechanics and their potential integration. Level 60 content remains under consideration, including possible modifications. Our primary focus involves gathering player feedback regarding these new raid experiences.”

“We’re tremendously excited for players to experience the journey from level 1 to 25 as the initial level band, then engage with redesigned raids featuring new mechanics. Lessons learned during early phases will directly influence subsequent phase development. We’re actively discussing Season of Mastery elements that might enhance Season of Discovery.”

Stone addressed zone scaling: “Most zones will maintain familiar scaling parameters. As Ana mentioned, we’ve reassessed enemy encounter difficulty across existing zones and future areas included in upcoming level brackets. Without detailing specific enemy challenges, I’d caution against venturing into inappropriate zones.”

“Despite this warning, I anticipate our dedicated community will attempt boundary-pushing exploration. I’m excited to witness their accomplishments. Zone tuning encourages players to remain within appropriate level brackets, though we’ve built flexibility for adventurous players.”

Resendez emphasized exploration freedom: “This remains the Season of Discovery, so we maintain openness to player exploration. We anticipate community challenges regarding level 25 zone penetration limits. However, discovering content doesn’t require venturing into high-level zones – lower-level discoveries remain accessible within appropriate areas.”

Avoid These Leveling Mistakes

Don’t waste time attempting high-level zones prematurely – discoveries are level-appropriate. Avoid specializing too early – the meta will evolve throughout the season. Don’t ignore profession synergies with new Runes – some provide significant combat advantages.

PvP Evolution: Ashenvale and Faction Balance Technology

Resendez detailed Ashenvale PvP mechanics: “This represents a world PvP engagement where initiation depends on detecting PvP activity within the zone. Once PvP participation reaches specific thresholds, the battle commences. Crucially, the system requires both factions’ presence – overwhelming faction majority prevents activation.”

“The encounter features two faction leaders positioned throughout the area, with victory achieved by defeating the opposition’s commander. Similar to Alterac Valley, defeating the enemy faction leader secures victory. Also mirroring AV mechanics, completing secondary objectives reduces the enemy leader’s power and surrounding guards’ strength. Increased objective completion significantly eases the final confrontation.”

“We’re incredibly excited to observe this system’s performance, particularly since it occurs in the open world rather than instanced environments. Classic PvP distinguishes itself from later expansions through its world-focused nature and epic world events. We aim to capture and expand this essence within our PvP developments.”

Stone added clarification: “While primarily PvP-focused, PvE activities within the region can also trigger the event. Multiple initiation methods exist, and we hope both PvP enthusiasts and adventurous PvE players participate.”

Stone explained faction balance innovation: “Early in Classic’s 2019 lifecycle, we observed PvP realms rapidly shifting toward single-faction dominance. Once players identified realm faction trends, they overwhelmingly committed to the dominant faction, abandoning the underrepresented side.”

“This situation fundamentally undermines PvP realm essence. Meaningful open-world PvP diminishes when one faction dominates, making minority faction gameplay excessively difficult. Community feedback consistently emphasizes balanced faction PvP realm importance and the superior gameplay experiences they generate.”

“Embracing Season of Discovery’s experimental spirit, we’re implementing unprecedented faction balance enforcement. While specific mechanics remain confidential, we’ve developed new monitoring tools and technologies that enable faction balance oversight and necessary intervention.”

“These interventions involve temporary character creation restrictions for specific factions based on realm balance metrics. Restrictions lift automatically when faction balance normalizes through realm activity. We anticipate this creating dynamic open-world experiences, though players accustomed to single-faction dominated realms may encounter unfamiliar challenges.”

“Our announcement noted that favorite farming locations might become ‘more spicy’ than experienced previously. Similarly, accessing certain raid entrances may prove more challenging depending on faction presence. Two important clarifications: this system exclusively applies to PvP realms, and we maintain flexibility to adjust based on player feedback.”

“We’ve diligently listened to player requests and enthusiastically implement this feature. Should community feedback indicate dissatisfaction, we retain easy reversal capability. Our priority remains smooth, enjoyable experiences for all participants, ensuring adequate space for every interested player.”

Resendez discussed server technology: “We’re particularly excited about underlying server capacity innovations. Hardcore implementation marked our first utilization of this technology, enabling significantly increased simultaneous player connections per realm.”

“Despite fewer available realms, each supports substantially larger player populations. We’re eager to observe this technology’s performance in Season of Discovery. Analyzing Classic trends reveals consistent patterns where certain realms achieve extreme popularity.”

“Accordingly, we’re enabling massive realm capacities facilitating friend groups playing together. We’re adopting Hardcore’s minimal realm approach, though not necessarily identical realm quantities. We’re prepared to accommodate all interested players except those on faction-restricted servers. Adequate playing space will be available at launch.”

PvP Optimization Strategies

Coordinate with your faction to maintain Ashenvale objective control – the buffs significantly impact the final encounter. On balanced PvP realms, form leveling groups for dangerous zones – safety in numbers matters more than ever. Monitor realm faction populations before committing – the balance enforcement means your choice has long-term consequences.

Future Roadmap and Community Engagement

Stone summarized the seasonal philosophy: “Everything returns to discovery’s core concept. World of Warcraft Classic approaches its 20th anniversary as a comprehensively solved game. Through community partnership and attentive listening, we’ve transformed this solved experience into renewed mystery.”

“Players can revisit Azeroth with fresh perspectives, exploring new class abilities acquired through their journey and creating novel social experiences within Classic Azeroth. Discovery remains our guiding principle, and we’re tremendously excited to witness player uncoverings throughout Season of Discovery.”

Resendez added: “I echo Clay’s sentiments completely. I’m particularly excited to welcome new players and Classic first-timers. Level bands potentially create less intimidating progression compared to the daunting 1-60 journey, especially when friends progress faster. I’m enthusiastic about welcoming both new and veteran players, observing their experiences and achievements, and hopefully delivering exceptional enjoyment.”
