Katress Overview: Why This Dark-Type Pal is a Must-Have
Among Palworld’s expansive roster, Katress stands out with a distinctly memorable gothic-witch aesthetic that captivates many players. Securing this Pal isn’t just about completing your Paldeck; it’s about adding a powerful, multifaceted asset to your team.
Functioning as a parallel to Wixen, Katress combines striking visual design with a practical skillset that accelerates mid-to-late game progression. This guide delivers the comprehensive knowledge needed to successfully integrate this valuable Dark-type into your collection.
With over 100 creatures to collect, targeting specific Pals requires a strategic approach. While early levels guide your initial steps, the game opens up significantly afterwards, allowing you to prioritize targets like Katress that offer immediate and long-term benefits.
Katress becomes a feasible target around Player Level 20, but we strongly recommend reaching Level 22-24 for a smoother capture experience. Its unique Partner Skill, Grimoire Collector, is the primary reason for this urgency: it causes Neutral-type Pals to drop more items when defeated. Incorporating Katress into your party early transforms general exploration into an efficient resource-grinding operation across the Palpagos Islands.
The following sections will transform this goal into a reality, providing detailed maps, battle-tested strategies, and utility guides.
Pinpointing Katress: Advanced Location & Spawn Mechanics
Fortunately, Katress has a predictable and concentrated spawn zone. Its primary habitat encompasses the vast central island region surrounding the Frostbound Mountains. Key coordinates to search include the grassy plateaus northeast of the Small Settlement fast travel point and the forests bordering the mountain’s lower slopes.
A critical mechanic to remember is its nocturnal nature. Katress will only spawn during the in-game night cycle. Attempting to search during daylight hours will yield no results. Plan your expeditions accordingly: finish your base tasks, set out as dusk falls, and be prepared to hunt through the night.
The Frostbound Mountains region lives up to its name. Before departure, craft and equip Cold-Resistant Armor (preferably the Thermal Undershirt variant unlocked by Level 23). Bring plenty of food and healing items to counteract environmental damage. A flying mount, such as a Nitewing, is highly recommended to safely survey the terrain from above and spot Katress more efficiently in the dark landscape.
Strategic Capture: Battle Preparation & Execution
Understanding type matchups is non-negotiable for a clean capture. As a Dark-element Pal, Katress takes increased damage from Dragon-type attacks and deals enhanced damage to Neutral-types. This makes Pals like Chillet (Dragon/Ice) and Dinossom (Dragon/Grass) premier counters. If you lack these, prioritize any Pal with high-damage Dragon skills, or at the very least, avoid bringing any Neutral-type Pals to the fight, as they will be quickly overwhelmed.
Your battle squad should consist of 2-3 Dragon-type attackers and 1 support Pal with healing or distracting skills. Engage with your strongest Dragon Pal first to whittle down its health. The goal is to get its health into the red capture threshold without knocking it out. Switch Pals strategically if one gets low on health.
Once its health is low, switch to Hyper Spheres or better. Standard Pal Spheres have a very low chance against a Level 20+ Katress. Throw from behind when it’s distracted by your Pal for a modest capture rate bonus. Have 10-15 high-quality spheres on hand to account for failed attempts. If you have the resources, crafting a Headgear for your active Pal can also slightly increase odds by reducing the chance your attacks will accidentally land a fatal blow.
Post-Capture Mastery: Maximizing Katress’s Utility
Katress’s value extends far beyond the battlefield. Its Level 2 Handiwork makes it one of the best early-mid game Pals for crafting complex items at your base. Assign it to a workbench to significantly speed up production of weapons, structures, and ammunition. Its Medicine Production skill is equally crucial, allowing it to craft healing items and status cures at the Medicine Bench, automating your medical supply chain. The Transporting skill rounds out its utility, enabling it to move materials between storage and production facilities.
To maximize its ‘Grimoire Collector’ farming skill, keep Katress in your active party and seek out areas with high Neutral-Pal density. Regions with Lamballs, Chikipis, and Cremis are ideal. The increased drop rate applies to all items, including precious resources like Paldium Fragments, Leather, and High-Quality Pal Oil, dramatically accelerating your resource accumulation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid: Don’t waste time searching during the day. Never engage Katress with a team of Neutral Pals. Avoid using low-tier spheres, as this wastes time and resources. Don’t neglect its base skills—failing to assign it to Handiwork or Medicine benches means missing half its value.
