Valorant devs add touching in-game tribute for young player who passed away

Discover how Riot Games honors a young Valorant fan with Corbin’s Light gun buddy and charitable initiatives

The Heartfelt Tribute Behind Corbin’s Light

Riot Games has created a touching memorial within Valorant to commemorate a dedicated young player named Corbin, who tragically lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. The developers designed a special gun buddy called Corbin’s Light as a permanent tribute to honor his memory and passion for the game.

Through collaboration with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Riot Games transformed Corbin’s final wish into an enduring in-game memorial that celebrates his life and connection to the Valorant community.

Valorant’s Episode 5 Act 3 battle pass introduces numerous cosmetic items for collection, but one accessory carries profound emotional significance that transcends typical in-game rewards. Corbin’s Light stands apart as both a collectible and a meaningful memorial.

Riot’s development team confirmed through an official blog post that this particular gun buddy serves as a dedicated remembrance for Corbin, a youthful Valorant enthusiast who passed away during his cancer treatment this year.

Before his passing, Corbin had submitted a formal request to collaborate with Riot Games through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. His family subsequently shared his aspiration on social media platforms, where it captured the attention of Valorant’s development team.

Valorant designers reached out to Corbin’s older brother, who provided creative direction and design concepts that his younger sibling had envisioned for potential in-game content.

“Corbin’s Light carries significant emotional weight for our team. We created it specifically for one of our community members who unfortunately succumbed to cancer,” explained Catalina Faerman, Associate Integration Artist at Riot Games.

“The Make-a-Wish Foundation honored Corbin by naming a celestial star after him,” Faerman continued. “We decided to pay tribute by designing a Gun Buddy inspired by his dedicated star, incorporating additional creative suggestions from his brother. We selected blue as the crystal’s primary color since it was Corbin’s preferred hue, and I engraved the celestial coordinates of his Make-a-Wish star onto the frame’s surface.”

Unlocking the Memorial Gun Buddy

The Corbin’s Light Gun Buddy is available through Valorant’s complimentary battle pass system and becomes accessible to every player upon reaching tier 30 progression.

For players seeking to obtain this meaningful memorial item, focusing on daily and weekly missions provides the most efficient progression path. Completing contract tiers and participating in regular gameplay sessions will accelerate your battle pass advancement toward tier 30.

Unlike premium battle pass items that require purchased access, Corbin’s Light demonstrates Riot’s commitment to making this tribute universally available to honor Corbin’s memory across the entire player base.

Riot’s Charitable Response and Legacy

Beyond the in-game memorial, Riot has committed to supporting the C-Squad Foundation, a charitable organization established in Corbin’s honor prior to his passing, through the Riot Games Social Impact Fund.

Riot will operate the Valorant Give Back // 2022 Bundle promotion from November 16 through November 30, during which 50% of revenue from weapon skin purchases and 100% of accessory proceeds will contribute to the Riot Games Social Impact Fund.

The C-Squad Foundation focuses on supporting families affected by childhood cancer and providing resources for young patients undergoing treatment. This charitable alignment creates a meaningful connection between Corbin’s legacy and ongoing support for others facing similar challenges.

Players who wish to contribute beyond obtaining the gun buddy can participate in the limited-time bundle purchase, knowing their financial support will directly assist families navigating childhood cancer treatment through the foundation established in Corbin’s memory.

Gaming Community Memorial Traditions

The creation of Corbin’s Light continues an emerging tradition within the gaming industry where developers memorialize dedicated community members through in-game content. This practice represents a powerful way to honor players who have made significant impacts on their communities.

Other notable examples include World of Warcraft’s memorial NPCs for players who passed away, and various esports organizations that have retired player numbers or created tribute items for influential community members.

For Valorant players, equipping Corbin’s Light not only adds a cosmetic item to their collection but also serves as a gesture of respect and remembrance for a fellow community member. Many players choose to use memorial items during specific matches or events to honor the memory they represent.

This growing tradition demonstrates how digital spaces can provide meaningful ways to commemorate individuals and create lasting legacies within gaming communities, transforming virtual items into symbols of real-world connection and remembrance.
