Exclusive insights on Sadako Rising development, gameplay strategies, and Dead by Daylight’s future mechanics
The Perfect Collaboration: Bringing Ringu to The Fog
We conducted an exclusive interview with Dead by Daylight’s Creative Director and Ringu film producers to explore the groundbreaking Sadako Rising chapter, loadout innovations, and Boon Totem evolution.
Dead by Daylight’s development calendar has maintained relentless momentum throughout the past year, with Chapter 23: Sadako Rising representing the culmination of this creative surge. Our in-depth discussion with Creative Director Dave Richard revealed how this crossover transforms the game’s narrative possibilities.
March 8th, 2022 marked a watershed moment for horror gaming enthusiasts, as Behaviour Interactive partnered with Kadokawa Corporation to integrate Ringu’s iconic characters into The Entity’s realm. This collaboration represents one of gaming’s most authentic Japanese horror adaptations.
During our comprehensive Q&A session, Creative Director Dave Richard detailed the intricate development process behind Sadako Rising, emphasizing the delicate balance between gameplay innovation and source material fidelity while previewing significant quality-of-life enhancements.
Sadako consistently ranked among our most requested Killer additions, and the collaborative stars finally aligned to make this ambitious project feasible after years of conceptual development.
The Ringu universe provided an unparalleled opportunity to explore specific Japanese pop culture horror elements, something our development team passionately embraces as part of our global horror curation mission.
Historically, we’ve integrated Killers inspired by diverse cultural backgrounds beyond our own. Our team’s inherent curiosity drives us to build this expansive horror universe where players can discover monstrous archetypes and terror manifestations across global traditions. This cultural exploration remains central to our development roadmap.
Sadako’s Gameplay Design Philosophy
The Ringu Chapter forced our team to fundamentally reconsider how psychological horror characters function within Dead by Daylight’s established mechanics. Sadako represents a departure from conventional aggressive Killers, embodying subtle terror rather than visceral violence.

Translating her passive aggression into gameplay where primary actions involve physical confrontation required innovative design thinking. This creative reassessment unlocked new developmental pathways for implementing psychologically-oriented entities.
Collaborating with Kadokawa proved exceptionally rewarding throughout this process. Their deep character knowledge and passionate universe stewardship established clear creative boundaries we needed to honor.
We maintained strict adherence to Sadako’s canonical height specifications and her fundamental characteristic of never making physical contact. Our design team collaborated extensively to devise inventive solutions for numerous gameplay metrics that would traditionally conflict with DBD’s core mechanics.
Her offensive capabilities, special abilities, and interaction mechanics with hooks and Survivors all derive from psychic energy manifestations. While we considered telekinetic hook projections, the descending hook mechanism provided an elegant visual solution.
Both characters represent Yōkai within Japanese folklore tradition, specifically vengeful spirit classifications. We previously contemplated The Onryō concept, but naming conventions presented localization challenges since we typically use English names as foundation references.
Determining appropriate nomenclature proved complex since she fundamentally exists as a spiritual entity. After verification that Japanese localization wouldn’t conflict with existing Spirit character naming, we confirmed The Onryō designation would perfectly suit this addition.
The Entity remains deliberately enigmatic within our narrative framework. We intentionally avoid defining its consciousness or strategic motivations – whether calculated, arbitrary, or insane remains ambiguous from both developer and player perspectives.
Our established lore confirms The Entity consumes emotional energy, making rage-filled characters like Sadako who generate profound suffering ideal candidates for integration into its dimensional realm.
Exploring cinematic source material revealed aquatic thematic opportunities. We theorize her oceanic origins given the character’s significant water associations. Early development included flashing cursed video imagery during attacks, though this concept ultimately didn’t survive final implementation.
Her primary psychic ability showcased in the films – Nensha – presented uniquely fascinating gameplay potential. This image projection onto media surfaces inspired the Glyph mechanics, creating thematically appropriate and visually distinctive power implementation.
From initial concept stages, we recognized the importance of translating her viral curse mechanics and the seven-day doom countdown. Since matches operate on compressed timelines, we needed alternative implementations for this iconic narrative element.
We experimented with various temporal frameworks including seven-minute countdowns before settling on the seven-notch system. This solution provided a clever franchise homage while maintaining gameplay balance.
The well represented another iconic object we strongly considered incorporating. We discussed potential power integration or Mori animation applications, but procedural level generation and tile-based gameplay architecture made implementation impractical. Instead, we created a unique character selection lobby appearance that captures the same thematic essence.
Yoichi Asakawa: Bridging Movie and Game Lore
Sadako consistently generates unease even when controlled by players. Selecting The Trapper evokes triumphant aggression, while Sadako produces visceral discomfort that permeates the gaming experience.
We deeply appreciate Kadokawa’s willingness to authorize new canonical developments for this character. Yoichi remains the sole cinematic survivor of Sadako’s curse, and fans have long speculated about his post-film fate, making this expansion particularly meaningful.
He embodies characteristics from both primary film protagonists, allowing us to incorporate elements of Reiko and Ryuji through his design. Developing Yoichi provided narrative access to these unexplored main characters.
Substantial inspiration for Yoichi’s backstory, characteristics, and visual design derives from his parental influences, creating rich developmental material for our creative team.
We seriously contemplated other iconic characters based on strong community interest, but the necessary collaborative conditions didn’t materialize for those particular implementations.
During character conceptualization, we ensured his scientific career alignment with his father’s profession. We wanted players to recognize his intellectual brilliance, academic achievement, and professional respect within scientific communities. His Sadako encounter triggered relentless truth-seeking behavior mirroring his mother’s investigative persistence.
Knowing Sadako’s potential coastal aquatic habitation naturally directed his academic focus toward oceanographic studies and related scientific disciplines.
For perk development, we aimed to showcase diverse personality dimensions through each ability. Certain perks highlight his connection to spiritual dimensions and ongoing communication with his father’s ghost. We incorporated empathetic and psychic connectivity elements with other characters within the gameplay mechanics.
Advanced Character Strategy: Yoichi’s Parental Guidance perk synergizes exceptionally well with healing-focused builds, allowing strategic positioning after safe hook rescues. His Clairvoyance ability provides crucial information during generator repair phases, making him ideal for reconnaissance-focused playstyles.
Common Mistake Avoidance: New Yoichi players often underestimate the strategic value of his psychic abilities. Rather than using them reactively, experienced players activate these perks during chase initiations to gain positional advantages and communicate Killer locations to teammates.
Advanced Sadako Gameplay Strategies
Dead by Daylight accommodates diverse playstyles, and our fundamental recommendation centers on prioritizing enjoyment above competitive obsession. Victory conditions shouldn’t overshadow the horror experience essence.
Sadako’s design enables authentic creepy gameplay where you can genuinely frighten opposing Survivors. Fully embracing this horror fantasy and utilizing television emergence for sudden terrifying appearances creates immensely satisfying moments.
The Condemned status mechanic enables compelling narrative outcomes when eliminating Survivors through this method rather than conventional processes. Invest time experimenting, enjoying creative expression, and combining various perks as you master her unique playstyle.
Sadako’s primary strength derives from unparalleled map control capabilities through television network teleportation. Strategic deployment timing and methodology separate proficient Sadako players from exceptional ones.
Television Placement Optimization: Advanced Sadako players prioritize television positioning near completed generators and exit gates. This creates late-game pressure points that force Survivors into dangerous positioning decisions during crucial match phases.
Condemned Status Mastery: The most effective Sadako strategies focus on building Condemned stacks through strategic television usage rather than direct confrontation. Combining this with perks that reveal Survivor locations creates relentless psychological pressure.
Common Strategic Errors: New Sadako players often overcommit to chasing individual Survivors rather than utilizing her map presence to control generator progress. The optimal approach involves frequent television hopping to maintain global pressure and generator regression.
Future of Dead by Daylight Mechanics
For established live-service games like Dead by Daylight, creating fresh creative and gameplay spaces energizes our development team. Scourge Hooks and Boon Totems introduced opportunities for innovative perk combination themes and strategic diversity.
Additional mechanics will continue development moving forward. Not every future Survivor will necessarily feature Boon capabilities. We’re addressing current demand patterns while potentially introducing entirely new mechanical systems.
Loadout systems emerged from both community feedback and our internal quality-of-life improvement initiatives as clearly desirable features.
The game experienced substantial growth throughout the past year with numerous new perk additions. Implementing perk search functionality, loadout preservation, and improved categorization systems would significantly enhance player experience.
The development experience remains incredibly rewarding. Our team comprises diverse individuals with varied horror content preferences. We all maintain personal favorites we’d like to incorporate eventually. We consider ourselves inherently curious explorers of both emerging and classic horror content across different audience preferences.
Similar to Sadako’s viral nature, we enjoy sharing our horror passions with the community, then witnessing established Ringu fans educate broader audiences about the franchise. Observing players experience that initial cinematic spark we felt creates profound satisfaction.
Character preference remains challenging to determine. While the new Chapter represents significant development effort, I maintain affection for all our Killer and Survivor roster. During personal gameplay, I consistently return to the original Wraith – this character fundamentally represents my preferred playstyle identity.
During internal playtesting sessions not focused on new Killer evaluation, I consistently select The Wraith, frequently surprising colleagues given his veteran status. This flexibility for personalized fantasy engagement represents one of our game’s strongest attributes.
Future Update Preview: Our development roadmap includes expanded Boon Totem interactions, enhanced loadout customization with search and filter capabilities, and quality-of-life improvements based on ongoing community feedback analysis.
Dead by Daylight: Sadako Rising launched on March 8, 2022, introducing revolutionary psychological horror mechanics to the game’s established formula.
