Howard emphasized that first-person remains the studio’s preferred mode for core gameplay, as it enhances environmental interaction and object manipulation – crucial elements in Bethesda’s signature “see it, take it” game design philosophy. However, the third-person option provides better situational awareness during space exploration and social interactions.
The character system represents a return to deeper RPG mechanics, with background selection and skill specialization offering more meaningful choices than recent titles. “We’re reintroducing elements that allowed greater player expression in our earlier games,” Howard noted, suggesting character development will significantly impact both narrative and gameplay.

These interstellar destinations aren’t just backdrops – they feature fully realized ecosystems with indigenous lifeforms and civilizations.
The development team has implemented “longevity systems” inspired by Skyrim’s replay value. These include procedurally generated content that refreshes exploration opportunities and narrative hooks that encourage extended playthroughs. However, Howard stressed that the main storyline remains accessible to players who prefer a more directed experience, with completion estimates comparable to previous Bethesda titles.
For completionists, planetary settlements promise substantial content depth. Cities are being designed using established Bethesda urban planning principles, meaning they’ll feature the same density of interactive elements and hidden stories that made locations like Whiterun and Diamond City memorable.

The combat system addresses scientific realities of space environments. “We’ve developed in-universe explanations for things like sound propagation in vacuum and laser weapon functionality,” Howard revealed. These solutions maintain gameplay familiarity while respecting physics – for instance, energy weapons might use particle beams visible to the naked eye rather than traditional laser visuals.
Weapon variety will include conventional ballistic firearms modified for space use alongside more exotic energy-based armaments. Each type features distinct handling characteristics and situational advantages, encouraging players to adapt their loadouts to different environments and opponents.
Starfield launches November 11, 2022 as an Xbox and PC exclusive, marking Bethesda’s first new universe in 25 years. The game represents both an evolution of the studio’s signature RPG formula and an ambitious foray into hard science fiction storytelling.
