Reliving Call of Duty’s greatest comeback: RØKKR’s historic reverse sweep strategy and mental resilience

The Impossible Comeback

Dexerto’s compelling new documentary provides unprecedented access to the minds behind Minnesota RØKKR’s legendary best-of-nine reverse sweep during the Call of Duty League Stage 5 Major.

August 1, 2021, marked a historic milestone when Minnesota RØKKR accomplished what many considered impossible in competitive Call of Duty – executing a full best-of-nine reverse sweep to claim the Stage 5 Major championship. Dillon ‘Attach’ Price and Eli ‘Standy’ Bentz provide exclusive commentary in Dexerto’s documentary revisiting this unprecedented esports achievement.

Facing a devastating 0-4 deficit in the Grand Finals, Minnesota RØKKR’s championship aspirations appeared completely extinguished. Reaching the finals alone represented a monumental achievement for a squad whose previous best Major performance was a fourth-place finish. The potential humiliation of a 5-0 sweep by Toronto Ultra threatened to overshadow their impressive tournament run.

Then the miraculous transformation occurred. Minnesota discovered an untapped reserve of competitive spirit and mounted an extraordinary comeback to secure the series 5-4.

Dexerto’s documentary ‘Behind CoD’s Greatest Comeback’ features exclusive interviews with RØKKR stars Standy and Attach as they recount the pivotal moments that defined their entire competitive season.

From Underdogs to Contenders

Minnesota RØKKR’s 2021 campaign showed inconsistent results throughout most of the season. Across the four majors preceding Stage 5 in late July, the team managed only a single top-five placement, highlighting their struggles with competitive consistency.

Entering Stage 5, the team’s fortunes began shifting positively. A solid third-place group stage performance earned them placement in the Winner’s Bracket for the Major tournament. This advancement came with immediate challenges, pitting them against dominant Atlanta FaZe, against whom RØKKR held an 0-2 season record.

The Major’s opening match delivered the first major upset as RØKKR secured a convincing 3-1 victory over FaZe. This propelled them to face the equally formidable Dallas Empire, against whom they held a 2-4 seasonal record. Minnesota repeated their success with another 3-1 triumph against Dallas.

“Our team morale reached unprecedented levels after defeating FaZe – we became the only squad to beat them without requiring a game five decision throughout the entire season,” Attach recalled. “Following that, we faced Dallas, another elite team that had previously placed second in a major, and defeated them 3-1… our collective confidence peaked at that moment.”

The Unlikely Path to Finals

The Dallas victory launched RØKKR into the Winner’s Final against Stage 2 champions Toronto Ultra. Despite the teams’ rivalry, dubbed ‘The Battle for the North’, Toronto maintained an undefeated 4-0 record against Minnesota in previous encounters.

This dominance ended abruptly as RØKKR delivered a stunning 3-0 shutout against Ultra, advancing to the Stage 5 Major Grand Final. However, Toronto sought redemption by defeating OpTic Chicago in the Loser’s Final, setting up a championship rematch against Minnesota.

“Our preparation suffered before the finals because other teams had completed their matches,” Attach explained. “Toronto competed against OpTic in the loser’s bracket while we conducted a suboptimal 3v3 raid practice session with our coaches, which failed to properly warm up our communication and coordination.”

Toronto established immediate dominance in the final’s opening map, securing a lopsided 250-34 victory.

The pressure intensified for RØKKR as they dropped maps two and three with similar decisiveness. Although they demonstrated competitive resilience in map four, the eventual defeat placed them in a statistically improbable position to recover.

Engineering the Reverse Sweep

“When facing such overwhelming odds, the pressure evaporates because you’ve got nothing left to lose,” Attach described. “We adopted the mindset of simply executing our gameplay without reservations. Our team excelled at Miami Search and Destroy, so we focused on securing that single map victory to build momentum from there.”

RØKKR demonstrated their Miami proficiency by securing a hard-earned 6-3 win.

“During a bathroom break between matches, we reassured each other to maintain composure and enjoy the moment,” Standy recalled. “We agreed that if defeat came, we’d go down fighting with maximum effort and no regrets about our performance.”

Toronto appeared increasingly helpless as RØKKR mounted their unprecedented comeback sequence.

  • Map 6 (Control on Garrison): 3-1 RØKKR
  • Map 7 (SnD on Standoff): 6-2 RØKKR
  • Map 8 (Hardpoint on Apocalypse): 250-165 RØKKR
  • The map eight victory transformed the Grand Final into an improbable deciding ninth map that few anticipated an hour earlier. The final confrontation would occur on Raid Search and Destroy, presenting mixed prospects for RØKKR. While they held a 2-1 record in Search and Destroy rounds during the Final, they simultaneously carried an 0-2 record specifically on Raid.

Standy initiated the final round with a critical double elimination that gave RØKKR the early advantage. He extended their lead to 2-0 with a triple elimination in the subsequent round. Minnesota built their advantage to 4-1 before Toronto mounted a brief resurgence with two clutch rounds, narrowing the score to 4-3. This marked Toronto’s final victory in Stage 5 as another crucial double elimination from Standy pushed RØKKR to 5-3, followed by successfully preventing the bomb plant from Toronto’s Tobias ‘CleanX’ Jønsson to complete their impossible mission.

    Inside the Players’ Minds

“The experience felt like participating in a cinematic masterpiece… The adrenaline surge was completely overwhelming… I nearly collapsed afterward and immediately needed to sit down,” Attach described following their historic victory.

Standy, widely recognized as the decisive factor in map nine, already contemplated future competitive challenges.

“Teammates continuously joked with me about my reverse sweep history, mentioning I’ve completed BO3, BO5, BO7, and now BO9 reverse sweeps,” Standy remarked. “They suggested tournament organizers might introduce BO11 formats where I’d need to overcome 0-5 deficits. I responded that such scenarios would test my cardiovascular endurance, but I’d willingly accept the challenge.”

Professional Insight: This historic comeback demonstrates several critical esports success factors: maintaining mental composure during deficits, identifying opponent momentum shifts, and capitalizing on specific map strengths. Teams studying this match should focus on developing resilience protocols for seemingly hopeless situations and creating structured warm-up routines that maintain competitive sharpness during extended tournament delays.
