Resident Evil Requiem returns to horror roots with terrifying new protagonist and gameplay mechanics
Introduction: The Return to Pure Horror
We experienced Resident Evil Requiem during an exclusive Summer Game Fest preview, and the horror intensity immediately stood out as exceptional.
The Resident Evil community erupted with excitement when Capcom revealed Resident Evil Requiem, the next major chapter in their iconic horror series.
While the announcement trailer provided a glimpse, the actual gameplay demonstration revealed much deeper horror elements that will define the player experience.
Capcom provided exclusive access to Requiem gameplay at a private Summer Game Fest event – and the experience delivers relentless terror from the opening moments. This installment appears to achieve the ideal balance between survival horror and strategic action.
Grace Ashcroft: A Vulnerable New Protagonist
Unlike Ethan Winters, who demonstrated remarkable resilience and combat proficiency against supernatural threats, Grace Ashcroft – believed to be the daughter of Outbreak’s Alyssa Ashcroft – possesses significantly fewer combat capabilities. As an FBI agent, she maintains firearm familiarity and resourcefulness under pressure, but director Koshi Nakanishi emphasizes her complete unpreparedness for the horrific situations she encounters.
During the 2025 Summer Game Fest presentation, the game opens with Grace awakening inverted on a medical gurney, restrained and connected to intravenous equipment. After initial disorientation, she manages to free herself and discovers she’s confined within a devastated facility without weapons and presumably no memory of how she arrived there.
Core Gameplay Mechanics and Atmosphere
Requiem’s environmental atmosphere creates immediate claustrophobia; despite being an observer rather than player, I felt genuine dread about potential threats hiding in darkness, amplifying the impending horror. Grace’s anxious breathing audible through headphones as she navigated completely black corridors potentially concealing various terrifying entities. The silence felt oppressive, with every sound unnaturally amplified. When distant footsteps echoed, genuine physical fear responses occurred.
Eventually, Grace reaches a kitchen area and opens a doorway, causing a cadaver to collapse onto the floor. As she investigates the body, an enormous, clawed hand enters the frame, camera panning upward to reveal a massive creature with formidable teeth intent on devouring our main character.

Resident Evil Requiem devs have no idea if it’s actually scary or not
This antagonist possesses enormous proportions, resembling a withered elderly woman grotesquely distorted and elongated. Her eyes protrude unnaturally from her skull, creating disturbing facial disproportion compared to her massive frame. She exhibits ravenous hunger for human flesh, with players designated as her next intended meal.
Escape represents the only viable strategy. Grace – whose movement speed appears frustratingly limited based on observations – must evade the voracious giant, which seems responsible for the facility’s widespread devastation. If she moves insufficiently quickly, the creature will overtake her and remove substantial flesh from her shoulder. While Grace can administer healing stimulants for recovery, it remains uncertain whether these medical items can be manufactured.
Classic Resident Evil Puzzle Systems
Longtime Resident Evil enthusiasts will recognize familiar gameplay loops. Participants must thoroughly explore environments to locate essential items, solve environmental puzzles to advance, and choose between confronting or escaping enemies. In this demonstration, Grace needed to discover electrical fuses and access keys to navigate through the complex facility.
The specific varieties of adversaries remain mostly unknown beyond the primary monster witnessed. However, we confirmed that gamers can instantly toggle between first-person and third-person viewpoints at any moment during gameplay. Combat mechanics currently remain mysterious, as the preview exclusively featured Grace in evasion scenarios.
First-Person and Third-Person Perspectives
The perspective switching capability represents a significant innovation for the franchise. First-person view enhances immersion and direct horror engagement, while third-person provides better situational awareness and spatial understanding. This dual approach allows players to adapt their experience based on personal preference or specific gameplay situations.
It’s incredibly refreshing to experience genuine fear from a Resident Evil title again; following the combat-focused narratives of Village, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Shadows of Rose, Requiem signifies an authentic homecoming to the ‘horror’ foundations magnificently established in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. While Biohazard delivered substantial scares, Requiem elevates terror to unprecedented levels.
Conclusion: The Future of Resident Evil Horror
Naturally, I observed only a minimal portion of this eagerly awaited game’s content. Numerous elements remain undiscovered – but based on current previews, the project already demonstrates exceptionally frightening potential.
Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms.
