Rainbow Six devs tease major Bartlett University map changes ahead of PvP return

Bartlett University map returns to Rainbow Six Siege with technical updates and design improvements

The Return of Bartlett University

Ubisoft Montreal has announced plans to reintroduce the controversial Bartlett University map to Rainbow Six Siege’s competitive multiplayer rotation. While no specific timeline has been provided, developers confirm the map will undergo significant technical upgrades before returning to PvP matchmaking.

Game designers acknowledge the map requires substantial reworking to meet modern Siege standards, with changes ranging from minor adjustments to complete layout transformations.

Historical Context and Player Feedback

Originally set on a fictional Massachusetts university campus, Bartlett U. earned notoriety among the Siege community for its confusing layout and excessive size. Player complaints about the map’s design flaws ultimately led to its removal from competitive playlists in 2018, restricting it to training scenarios and custom matches.

Community consensus placed Bartlett among Siege’s least popular maps, alongside Hereford Base and Tower, with professional players particularly critical of its unbalanced sightlines and excessive destructibility that undermined tactical gameplay.

Technical Challenges and Modernization

Level Design Director Yann explained during the Reddit AMA that reviving Bartlett presents unique technical hurdles. The map’s aging architecture requires complete rebuilding to support current game systems, regardless of how extensive the gameplay changes might be.

“We’re approaching this as an opportunity to completely reimagine Bartlett while preserving its campus identity,” developers noted. The overhaul will address fundamental issues with room connectivity, objective placements, and vertical gameplay that originally made the map unpopular.
