Pro-union protesters put in the “free speech zone”
Union advocates demonstrating at The Game Awards 2022 reported experiencing intimidation tactics from both security personnel and local law enforcement during their protest activities near the venue entrance.
Members of the Game Workers Alliance experienced confrontations with police officers while picketing outside The Game Awards 2022, including allegations of badge confiscation and attempts to confine demonstrators within a designated protest area labeled as a “Free Speech Zone.”
The Game Awards shattered previous audience records by attracting more than 3.4 million concurrent viewers during its broadcast peak, bringing unprecedented visibility to video game creators and the entertainment products they develop.
Jessica Gonzalez, a lead organizer for the Game Workers Alliance and founder of the ABetterABK initiative, joined fellow activists outside The Game Awards venue carrying placards proclaiming ‘The Game Worker Awards’ and distributing buttons featuring the slogan ‘Labor Makes Games’ to communicate their message.
Dexerto conducted an exclusive interview with Gonzalez to document her firsthand account of the evening’s events and gather specific details about interactions with both private security teams and public law enforcement officers.
According to Gonzalez’s narrative, event security personnel summoned police officers to confront the protesters stationed near the venue entrance, leading to a tense exchange with members of the Los Angeles Police Department that she later described in detail during her media interview.
“Before arriving at the venue, we proactively sought legal counsel from both LAPD’s specialized labor relations unit and an attorney specializing in protest rights,” Gonzalez explained. “We understood our legal protections for conducting informational picketing on public property adjacent to the venue. Security personnel objected to our presence because we presented an unfavorable image for their corporate event, so they attempted to intimidate us by contacting police and falsely claiming the area constituted private property. We firmly asserted our constitutional rights, and they eventually agreed to establish a designated protest zone within twenty minutes.”
Social media documentation shows the demonstrators engaged in discussions with LAPD officers in one image, while another photograph reveals the subsequently established protest enclosure referred to as the “Free Speech Zone.” Gonzalez stated that she and fellow activists deliberately ignored this designated area and maintained their position outside the main entrance.
“We maintained our legal right to demonstrate at the entrance area,” Gonzalez emphasized. “They ultimately had to acknowledge our protected rights rather than the restricted permissions they preferred to grant.”
Additional reports emerged regarding an attendee named Ellie who allegedly had her pro-union badge confiscated by security while attempting to enter The Game Awards venue. Dexerto questioned Gonzalez about her knowledge of this particular incident.
We have received reports that security personnel compelled attendees to remove their “Labor Creates Games” badges, directly contravening Microsoft Theater’s established policies that permit items expressing fan appreciation during hosted events.

“I became aware of one specific situation where a developer received a badge from us, placed it on her clothing, and was then informed by security that she couldn’t enter wearing that item,” Gonzalez recalled. “The guard pointed directly at the badge she had just attached and instructed her to discard it in a trash container. This represents the only confirmed incident of this nature that I know about, and I suspect it occurred because security witnessed us distributing the badge to her.”
Gonzalez noted she hadn’t received additional reports about ‘Labor Makes Games’ badge removals and confirmed that numerous other developers entered the venue wearing the badges without encountering issues.
“I learned that many developers proudly displayed these badges throughout the event,” she added. “As long as developers demonstrated solidarity by wearing ‘Labor Creates Games’ badges, I considered the protest successful despite security’s unprofessional conduct.”
When questioned about potential motivations behind security’s opposition to pro-union messaging at the event, Gonzalez offered this perspective:
“This industry celebration typically elevates corporate executives while overlooking the contributions of everyday development staff. Labor organizations represent a legitimate threat to companies because they challenge compensation structures that have generated substantial executive bonuses through systematic wage suppression. Naturally, corporate interests resist labor movements that educate developers about their workplace rights.”
