Pokemon Go Team Go Rocket Takeover: Shiny Pawniard, Shadow Mewtwo, more

Master the Team Go Rocket Takeover with dates, Shadow Pokémon strategies, and advanced egg hatching tips.

Event Overview & Core Rewards

Niantic has unveiled the latest Team GO Rocket Takeover, a limited-time event that will run concurrently with the Greedy Gluttons celebration. This dual-event period offers a concentrated burst of content for trainers seeking both new Pokémon and challenging battles.

This Team GO Rocket Takeover is headlined by two major prizes: the powerful Legendary Shadow Mewtwo makes its return, and the sleek Shiny Pawniard debuts for the first time in Pokémon GO.

The Greedy Gluttons event launches on November 9, introducing Guzzlord and Shiny Munchlax. The Rocket Takeover then activates several days later, creating a week packed with objectives for dedicated players.

The Takeover is your exclusive window to obtain a Shiny Pawniard and to challenge Giovanni for a Shadow Mewtwo. This guide will detail the event schedule, all available bonuses, the changed Rocket lineups, and strategic advice to maximize your rewards.

Event Schedule & Timing Strategy

The takeover will begin on Monday, November 14, 2022, at 12:00 AM and will conclude on Thursday, November 17, at 8:00 PM local time. This gives you roughly four full days of activity.

Pro Timing Tip: Rocket Balloons spawn every 6 hours (at 12 AM, 6 AM, 12 PM, and我们发现,在活动期间,他们出现的频率会增加。 6 PM). Plan your play sessions around these spawns to maximize Leader and Grunt battles without needing to visit PokéStops. The final day ending at 8 PM is not a midnight cutoff, so plan your last Giovanni attempt accordingly.

Common Mistake: Many trainers forget the event ends at 8 PM, not 11:59 PM. Failing to use a Charged TM to remove Frustration before 8 PM on the 17th will lock that move onto your Shadow Pokémon until the next Takeover event, which could be months away.

Maximizing Event Bonuses & Mechanics

Throughout the event, Team GO Rocket will be appearing more frequently at PokéStops as well as in balloons. This is the best time to farm Mysterious Components to build Radar devices.

You’ll also be able to use a Charged TM to help a Shadow Pokémon forget the Charged Attack ‘Frustration.’ Advanced Strategy: Prioritize removing Frustration from meta-relevant Shadows like Mewtwo, Machop, or Swinub first. Do not waste TMs on weak species. Ensure you have enough Charged TMs (regular ones work) stocked up before the event starts.

Rocket Grunts & Leaders during the event will be using different Pokémon on their teams. Optimization Tip: Memorize the Grunt phrases (“Don’t bother – I’ve already won!” for Flying, etc.) to quickly identify and farm for specific Shadow Pokémon you need for your collection or for PvP. Leaders (Arlo, Cliff, Sierra) will have their standard monthly lineups, not special event ones.

During the Takeover, those who beat Giovanni through special research will encounter Shadow Mewtwo. Key Reminder: You must have the current Special Research story, “Showdown in the Shadows,” active and progressed to the final step to challenge Giovanni. You cannot use an old Super Rocket Radar from a previous research line.

Shadow Pokémon Lineup & Capture Tactics

In addition to Shadow Mewtwo from Giovanni, Team GO Rocket has corrupted more species into Shadow Pokémon. This includes both new additions and returning favorites.

  • Shadow Alolan Diglett
  • Shadow Mawile (increased chance from Sierra)
  • Shadow Sneasel (common from Grunts)
  • Shadow Swinub (highly sought-after for PvE)

Capture & Purification Advice: For PvP (GO Battle League), some Shadow Pokémon are top-tier (e.g., Shadow Machamp, Shadow Swampert). For PvE (Raids), Shadows deal 20% more damage but take 20% more damage. Purification is generally not recommended for Pokémon you plan to use in raids, as the Shadow bonus outweighs the cheaper power-up cost. However, for a Pokémon like Sableye used in PvP, purification for Return can be a strategic move.

Common Mistake: Immediately purifying a high-IV Shadow Mewtwo. Shadow Mewtwo is the strongest Psychic-type attacker in the game. The Stardust and Candy cost to power it up is high, but its damage output justifies the investment for serious raiders.

12km Egg Pool & Hatching Optimization

The following Pokémon will be available to hatch from 12km eggs acquired during the event. These eggs are obtained by defeating Team GO Rocket Leaders.

Event 12km Egg Pool: Pawniard (non-Shiny), Vullaby, Sandile, Salandit, Pancham, Skrelp, and Deino. Note: Shiny Pawniard is only available via direct encounter from defeating Grunts/Leaders, not from eggs.

Hatching Optimization Tips:
1. Use your free Infinite Incubator for 2km/5km eggs first to clear inventory.
2. Save your Super Incubators for these 12km eggs to reduce walk distance by 33%.
3. Stack multiple 12km eggs and activate a Star Piece just before they hatch to maximize Stardust gain.
4. Focus on defeating Leaders via balloons for efficiency, as their eggs don’t take up egg inventory space until you have an open slot.

Advanced Player Strategies & Common Pitfalls

Resource Allocation: Before the event, stock up on Max Potions, Max Revives, and Charged TMs. Rocket battles will consume your healing items. Pinap Berries are recommended for catching Shadow Pokémon you plan to purify (double Candy), while Silver Pinaps are best for Shadow Mewtwo.

Team Building for Battles: For Grunts, have a team of three high-DPS Pokémon with type advantage. For Leaders and Giovanni, use dedicated counter teams. Melmetal (with Rock Slide & Superpower), Machamp, Swampert, and Mewtwo are excellent generalists for breaking shields quickly.

Mistakes to Avoid:
• Using a Premium Battle Pass on Giovanni (he doesn’t require one).
• Forgetting to claim the Special Research step rewards after beating a Leader, blocking progress.
• Wasting time battling Grunts for Pokémon you don’t need once you have your radar components.
• Transferring a Shadow Pokémon with good IVs before using a TM to remove Frustration.
