Pokemon Go A Seven Colored Shadow guide: Team Go Rocket Special Research tasks

Complete guide to Shadow Ho-Oh in Pokemon Go: Dates, tasks, rewards, and battle strategies

Event Overview

Team Rocket strikes again in Pokemon Go, this time corrupting the legendary Ho-Oh into a powerful Shadow variant available through limited-time Special Research.

The Gen II legendary phoenix Ho-Oh has fallen victim to Team Rocket’s shadowy experiments, transforming into a dark version with increased attack power but decreased defense. This coveted Pokemon can be yours by completing the ‘A Seven Colored Shadow’ research from June 17 at 12AM local time through September 1 at 12AM.

Pro Tip: Clear any previous Team Rocket Special Research (like ‘The Higher They Fly’) beforehand to ensure immediate access when the event begins.

Special Research Tasks & Rewards

The six-stage research offers substantial rewards while preparing you for the final Giovanni encounter:

  • Catch 10 Pokemon – Earn a Teddiursa encounter (great for evolving into Ursaring)
  • Spin 3 PokeStops/Gyms – Get a Sun Stone (rare evolution item)
  • Purify 1 Shadow Pokemon – Receive 15 Poke Balls

Stage Rewards: 1500 XP, 500 Stardust, Gloom encounter

Advanced Strategy: Complete purification tasks during Rocket Takeover events when Shadow Pokemon appear more frequently.

  • Defeat 5 Team Go Rocket Grunts – 5 Hyper Potions
  • Catch 5 Shadow Pokemon – 5 Revives
  • Purify 3 Shadow Pokemon – 15 Great Balls

Rewards: 2000 XP, 500 Stardust, Xatu encounter

Battling Giovanni for Shadow Ho-Oh

After defeating all three Team Leaders (Arlo, Cliff, Sierra) and obtaining the Super Rocket Radar, you’ll face Giovanni in a challenging battle:

  • Recommended Team: Rhyperior (Smack Down/Rock Wrecker), Kyogre (Waterfall/Surf), and Mewtwo (Psycho Cut/Psystrike)
  • Battle Tip: Save shields for Giovanni’s second Pokemon which typically hits hardest

Upon victory, you’ll rescue Shadow Ho-Oh. Consider purifying it (costing 20,000 Stardust and 20 Candy) to improve its IVs and reduce power-up costs, though some trainers prefer keeping it shadow for the 20% attack boost.
