Overwatch 2 pros reveal innovative support hero abilities that could redefine team dynamics
The Current Support Meta
The Overwatch support roster currently emphasizes healing throughput, but professional players are advocating for more creative utility options in the sequel.
While all support heroes maintain healing capabilities as their core function, the most strategically valuable ones offer game-changing utilities. Lucio’s Speed Boost remains unparalleled for team mobility, Zenyatta’s Discord Orb amplifies damage output, and Mercy’s Resurrection can swing team fights. However, many pros feel the support role needs fresh mechanics that reward creative playmaking beyond these established abilities.
Professional players particularly want abilities that enable more proactive support play. “The best supports currently react to situations rather than create opportunities,” explains former OWL analyst Scott ‘Custa’ Kennedy. “We need tools that let supports initiate plays, not just respond to them.”
Pro-Requested Abilities
Blizzard EntertainmentThe most discussed concept is a “reverse Guardian Angel” ability that would allow supports to pull allies to safety. “Imagine being able to yank a teammate out of a Roadhog hook or away from a D.Va bomb,” Custa elaborated. This would create dramatic counterplay options against crowd control abilities while requiring precise timing and positioning.
Vancouver Titans’ Randal ‘Roolf’ Stark proposed a World of Warcraft-inspired “Leap of Faith” adaptation. This would instantly reposition an ally to the support’s location, potentially saving teammates from dangerous situations or enabling aggressive repositioning strategies. However, such an ability would need careful balancing to prevent abuse in competitive play.
These proposed abilities would significantly raise the skill ceiling for support players.
Strategic Implications
These proposed abilities would fundamentally change team dynamics. The reverse Guardian Angel could create new peel options against dive compositions, while Leap of Faith might enable more aggressive positioning strategies. However, they also introduce new counterplay considerations – enemies might need to bait out these abilities before committing ultimates.
Advanced players could leverage these tools for creative playmaking. “Imagine using Leap of Faith to reposition a Reinhardt during his charge,” suggests Roolf. “Or pulling your sniper to safety the moment they take fire.” These mechanics would reward game sense and quick reflexes, potentially making support play more appealing to mechanically skilled players.
