Overwatch 2 Beta Patch Analysis: Mercy’s New Super Jump, Baptiste & Sojourn Buffs Explained
Introduction: A Transformative Beta Patch
The latest Overwatch 2 beta patch on PC introduces significant gameplay alterations, most notably granting Mercy a built-in ‘Super Jump’ mechanic alongside meaningful buffs to Baptiste and Sojourn.
This update represents a shift in design philosophy, where previously niche, high-skill techniques are being integrated into core hero kits to improve accessibility and consistency. For Mercy mains, this means the celebrated but technically demanding Super Jump is now a standardized part of her mobility options.
Beyond Mercy, the adjustments to Baptiste and Sojourn reflect targeted efforts to solidify their roles—Baptiste as the definitive burst-saving support and Sojourn as a more reliable damage dealer. These changes will inevitably ripple through both casual and competitive meta discussions.
Mercy’s Guardian Angel: Super Jump Demystified
The headline change is the formal addition of a ‘Super Jump’ to Mercy’s kit. Players can now activate a vertical launch by pressing the crouch key to cancel Guardian Angel mid-flight.
Dev Notes: This is an initial implementation of new functionality designed to give Mercy players more options in how they use Guardian Angel. Some Mercy players were already able to do similar boosts by using a somewhat complicated technique often referred to as ‘Super jump’. This new functionality will allow all players to more consistently perform similar boosts, while the original technique is still there and remains untouched.
In some ways this new cancel boost is even stronger than the original technique, since players are able to do this at any time rather than requiring them to be near their target. This is just an initial implementation and we’re eager to get feedback on how to improve it.
Practical Tip: Use the new crouch-cancel primarily for unexpected repositioning during a fight. Since it doesn’t require a nearby ally, you can use it to dodge flankers like Genji or Reaper by launching straight up when they engage, forcing them to look upwards and disrupting their aim.
Common Mistake to Avoid: Don’t overuse this new jump in open spaces without cover. While it makes you harder to hit for ground-based heroes, it turns you into a predictable, floating target for hitscan heroes like Ashe, Soldier: 76, or Widowmaker. Use it to reach high ground cover, not to hover in the open.
Baptiste’s Enhanced Clutch Potential
Baptiste’s Regenerative Burst undergoes a critical redesign, shifting from purely overtime healing to incorporating a substantial instant heal component.
Dev Notes: This change helps reinforce Baptiste as a support hero that can save allies in clutch moments. This new functionality is intended to synergize with Immortality Field, allowing for faster recovery after saving his allies (or himself!) from imminent danger.
This change fundamentally alters how Baptiste is played during crisis moments. The 100 instant heal (when doubled on low-health allies) can negate a final blow from many abilities, making his Immortality Field combo even more potent.
Optimization Tip for Advanced Players: The double healing on allies below 50% health creates a new decision threshold. Instead of pre-emptively using Regenerative Burst for sustain, hold it until your tank or diving DPS crosses that 50% HP line to maximize its value. This turns the ability into a powerful reactive tool rather than a passive heal-over-time aura.
Strategic Implication: This buff solidifies Baptiste’s niche as the premier support for brawl and poke compositions that take predictable burst damage. He becomes significantly stronger against heroes like Junkrat or Roadhog who rely on landing a single high-damage combo.
Sojourn’s Railgun: A Subtle but Significant Buff
Sojourn receives a dual buff targeting her Railgun’s primary fire, with increases to both its rate of fire and maximum ammo capacity.
Dev Notes: Sojourn has been a little weak since her initial addition to the roster. While this change doesn’t seem huge, increasing her rate of fire increases her alternate fire charge rate and ultimate gain, as well as purely increasing her primary fire’s raw DPS.
Whenever a weapon’s rate of fire changes, it also changes how quickly the weapon will drain its magazine and run out of ammo. We’re increasing her ammo count to compensate for this.
The 15% increase in fire rate translates to more than just higher damage per second. It means her secondary, high-impact shot charges approximately 15% faster, and her ultimate, Overclock, builds more quickly. This addresses core complaints about her feeling underwhelming in sustained fights.
Practical Tip: With the faster fire rate, Sojourn can more reliably ‘spray’ at tanks like Reinhardt or D.Va to build her secondary charge, then quickly flick to a squishy target for the finishing railgun shot. Practice tracking on larger targets before snapping to smaller ones.
Common Mistake: Do not waste the increased ammo by holding down primary fire indefinitely. The buff requires more disciplined ammo management. Burst fire is still crucial for accuracy at medium to long range. The extra ammo is a buffer for sustained close-range duels, not a license to spam.
Meta Implications & Looking Forward
The collective impact of these changes will likely shift the Overwatch 2 meta, particularly in how support lines are constructed and how dive compositions are countered.
Mercy’s increased survivability and independent mobility make her a stronger pairing with mobile DPS heroes like Pharah, Echo, or Sojourn herself. Baptiste’s enhanced burst healing could see him rise as a preferred main support in compositions that lack a shield tank, as his kit can now better mitigate sudden focus fire.
Sojourn’s buffs, while numerically modest, may push her into a more mainstream DPS pick, potentially challenging the dominance of other mid-range hitscan heroes. The developers have explicitly noted this is an initial implementation, particularly for Mercy’s new jump, meaning player feedback during this beta period will be crucial for final tuning.

As the community tests these adjustments, the focus will be on whether they achieve their goals: making Mercy more intuitive, Baptiste more impactful in critical moments, and Sojourn a more competitive damage option, all without destabilizing the existing hero ecosystem.
