MW3 & Warzone Altered Strain event: Start date, rewards, more

Master the Altered Strain event with start dates, optimized farming strategies, and a complete reward breakdown.

When does MW3 & Warzone’s Altered Strain event start?

Dive into the biopunk-themed chaos of the Altered Strain event, a major content drop arriving with Season 4 Reloaded for both Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone. This guide delivers the essential intel you need to conquer its challenges and claim every reward.

Season 4 Reloaded has already injected the game with fresh content, including the powerful Reclaimer 18 Shotgun, the brutal Sledgehammer melee weapon, the new Incline map, and the retro-inspired Bit Party playlist on Favela. The Altered Strain event continues this momentum, building directly on the mechanics introduced in the earlier Critical Countdown event.

Mark your calendars: The Altered Strain event is officially live from June 26, 2024, and will conclude on July 24, 2024. This provides a full four-week engagement window across all supported platforms.

A four-week runtime is generally considered generous for a seasonal event. For the average player committing a few hours per week, this should be ample time to complete the core challenges. However, completionists aiming for every single reward, especially the later Mastery Challenge unlocks, will need to plan their grind more diligently.

How to earn rewards from MW3 & Warzone’s Altered Strain event?

The core gameplay loop mirrors the Critical Countdown event: you must collect “Altered DNA Samples”. These vital resources are obtained primarily from two sources: eliminating enemy operators and opening loot caches scattered across the battlefield.

Practical Tip: Focus on high-player-density modes like Plunder, Resurgence, or Multiplayer Hardpoint and Domination to maximize enemy encounters. Loot caches in Warzone are plentiful in key named Points of Interest (POIs); memorizing their common spawn locations can drastically increase your haul.

DNA samples are categorized by color and code, each tied to a specific reward track: Ade-OGT (Blue), Cyto-RCG (Orange), and two types labeled TBA (Green and Red). Progress is tracked in four separate Mastery Challenges, though at launch, only the first challenge’s full requirements are visible. The others will unlock as the event progresses.

Common Mistake to Avoid: Don’t ignore loot caches! While getting kills is satisfying, caches provide a guaranteed sample yield without risk. Players who focus solely on combat may find their progress slowing compared to those who balance aggression with looting. In Warzone, always prioritize securing a Stronghold or Black Site for access to concentrated high-value loot.

The Ultimate Prize: Upon completing all four Mastery Challenges, you will be awarded the exclusive “Strand and Slaughter” Weapon Blueprint for the SOA Subverter Battle Rifle. This is the event’s pinnacle reward, offering a unique visual and potentially functional design for a powerful weapon.

Optimization Tip for Advanced Players: Prioritize farming the specific DNA color for the reward you want most. If you’re after the early Double XP tokens, focus on general play. If you’re targeting a specific Mutation Augmentation or the final blueprint, you must strategically hunt for the required sample color once its challenge is active. Teaming up with a squad and communicating to share loot caches can exponentially increase your collective sample gathering rate.
