Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov shares insights on gameplay evolution, gaming industry challenges, and the psychology behind puzzle games
The Timeless Gameplay Legacy

During the recent Red Bull Tetris World Final 2025 championship event, the legendary creator Alexey Pajitnov witnessed his creation’s continued global dominance firsthand. The iconic puzzle game he developed over forty years earlier maintains extraordinary popularity with expanding worldwide recognition and competitive appeal.
Alexey: The game’s success stems from two fundamental components. Primarily, the core interactive mechanics remain perfectly preserved and accurately replicated across every iteration and platform variation. Even unauthorized regional adaptations attempt to maintain these essential mechanics. This demonstrates the foundational gameplay structure I established four decades ago possesses enduring solidity and universal appeal.
We’ve witnessed remarkable evolutionary progress through numerous innovative attempts. My original prototype version, depicted on this commemorative t-shirt (gestures toward his apparel), represented just the beginning. Subsequent editions transformed Tetris into a worldwide gaming phenomenon. Essentially, my creation has integrated numerous valuable enhancements, graphical improvements, and feature expansions throughout its history. It represents an exceptionally fortunate gaming concept.
Gaming Philosophy and Psychology
Alexey: This represents a particularly contentious historical narrative. During our initial development phase in the 1980s, numerous negative rumors circulated regarding gaming’s societal impact. The title represented groundbreaking innovation. Contemporary audiences might not recall or access historical media coverage, but substantial criticism targeted computer gaming specifically. Many expressed genuine concern about detrimental effects on youth development and potential violence stimulation.
I consistently advocated for an alternative perspective. I believed gaming provided optimal entertainment experiences through active participation. The medium offers superior value compared to passive consumption of explicit or violent cinematic content because it demands engagement and inspires resistance to challenges. Participants contribute their personal motivation, cognitive strengths, and focused attention during gameplay.
I’ve perpetually supported video gaming as a legitimate entertainment form. Those defending computer games frequently emphasize educational utility or learning benefits. I never endorsed this justification approach. Tetris represents pure recreational enjoyment designed for amusement. Players should derive screen-based happiness and personal satisfaction. Gaming should entertain and provide enjoyment – these represent the primary objectives. I discourage using it for educational advancement or skill development purposes.
However, Tetris demonstrates unexpected beneficial side effects. Multiple individuals have approached me describing its utility for novice automobile operators. Beginning drivers must make rapid, high-quality decisions under time pressure. Tetris appears to enhance this specific concentration ability. The game demands simultaneous observation and focused attention. Somehow this transfers beneficially to driving contexts, though I lack empirical data verification.
Later, Oxford psychologist Emily Holmes contacted us regarding her meticulous research into post-traumatic event treatment using video games. She scientifically demonstrated Tetris provides definite assistance during stressful circumstances. Essentially, traumatic situations primarily cause recurring flashback phenomena. Individuals experiencing distressing events frequently encounter intrusive memory recurrences.
When people engage with Tetris – an intensely visual cognitive activity – following traumatic incidents, it appears to displace negative mental imagery. The game alleviates flashback frequency for affected individuals. Her scientific validation represents significant academic achievement. Nevertheless, I maintain my original position – Tetris exists for entertainment purposes.
Cultural Impact and Personal Moments
Alexey: Numerous jokes and caricatures emerged throughout our history. Russian culture produced various humorous examples, including military-themed anecdotes where officers commanded soldiers to perform jumping exercises. Another officer might remark, “Stop playing Tetris during duty hours” (chuckles) or similar comedic variations. These jokes became culturally pervasive.
I distinctly recall one particularly moving competition moment when a young student journalist approached requesting my signature on his Game Boy cartridge. I provided the autograph, and he subsequently used adhesive to permanently preserve the signature inside the cartridge casing. This represented an exceptionally touching interaction.
Modern Gaming Industry Challenges
Alexey: I prefer not to evaluate the entire gaming industry comprehensively since I rarely play character-driven titles, though I dedicated eight years to World of Warcraft engagement.
Angshuman: Henk mentioned introducing you to the game, and you eventually surpassed his skill level.
Alexey: Absolutely, on multiple occasions. His professional commitments prevented equivalent gameplay investment. I also genuinely appreciate Minecraft’s creative potential. It represents an exceptionally well-designed game with tremendous creative freedom and promising long-term viability for coming decades. However, my personal preference remains puzzle and compact gaming experiences. These genres show developmental progress but haven’t reached their ultimate potential.
The puzzle gaming sector historically occupied a specialized niche. Major gaming titles initially elevated their visibility. Later, casual gaming emergence and evolving financial structures marginalized these games. We now face a problematic situation where puzzle game developers and producers essentially operate as digital panhandlers, selling inexpensive features, microtransaction items, and advertising space.
Consider this rationally – consumers willingly spend six dollars for specialty coffee beverages. Why wouldn’t they pay three dollars for dozens of entertainment hours? Somehow this economic model fails practically. The industry continues begging for minuscule microtransaction payments that ultimately degrade gameplay quality. This represents the fundamental problem I observe.
Consequently, developers cannot allocate adequate resources for proper game design implementation. They modify games dynamically based on performance metrics, which constitutes terrible practice. They create games, identify successful elements, and implement immediate changes. This approach represents design integrity compromise. I anticipate these practices will disappear shortly, restoring sensible business frameworks.
Future Vision and Personal Gaming
Angshuman: Do you currently engage with any games?
Alexey: Certainly, puzzle titles primarily. I demonstrate proficiency with Sudoku puzzles. I regularly play 2048 and maintain approximately twelve different games in constant rotation. Bejeweled represented another exceptionally well-designed puzzle experience.
Alexey: That’s an excellent inquiry. Primarily, I would preserve the fundamental gameplay mechanics unchanged – they’re proven, reliable, and perpetually effective.
I recall during initial game development, I recognized the design quality but feared overwhelming the experience with excessive features that might distort the core concept. I operated as an apprehensive game designer during those early stages.
Currently, I would demonstrate greater confidence and likely incorporate numerous features immediately. I would definitely implement enhanced interactive components because contemporary audiences expect sophisticated engagement.
