Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days blends two games together with a seamless undead twist

Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days combines survival horror with community management in a revolutionary zombie apocalypse experience

Hands-On Preview: A Compelling Survival Experience

Our early access session with Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days left us immediately craving another playthrough, demonstrating the game’s addictive loop and compelling design.

Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days represents a significant evolution for New Zealand’s PikPok studio, showcasing their mastery of the survival genre. The compelling 2.5D perspective, relentless undead adversaries, and complex community dynamics converge to create what promises to be an essential gaming experience in 2024.

Amidst Nintendo’s dominant showcase at PAX Australia 2023, the Into the Dead exhibit stood out with its haunting atmosphere. The carefully arranged 1980s artifacts and mysterious black curtain enclosure created an immersive environment that captivated convention attendees throughout the event.

We had the privilege of experiencing this promising indie title early in the convention and engaging with the development team. Despite sampling only one aspect of the complete package, the experience generated an immediate desire to restart and explore different strategic approaches.

The challenging mechanics and unforgiving permadeath system mean tactical errors can prove catastrophic in this zombie-plagued sidescroller. However, permadeath extends beyond mere resource loss—it represents the permanent elimination of community members you’ve invested in and grown attached to.

During the demonstration, PikPok highlighted the game’s more action-intensive component. Our objective involved navigating through devastated neighborhoods in Walton City to scavenge essential supplies, attempting to complete multiple consecutive levels to maximize resource acquisition—a goal we ultimately couldn’t achieve.

Discovering scattered resources including building materials, makeshift weapons, and other essentials proved vital as we struggled to survive against the persistent zombie menace. We quickly discovered that encountering even a single undead creature could derail our progress, while confronting an entire swarm became nearly impossible to overcome.

Within the survival-focused segment, every decision carries weight since a single misstep can result in your character being torn apart by the undead. These zombies deviate from the stereotypical slow-moving threats—modeled after 28 Days Later’s infected, they charge aggressively and allow no recovery time. Compounding the difficulty, death represents a permanent consequence with no resurrection mechanics.

When characters perish, they remain permanently deceased. All advancement disappears, collected resources abandon beside their remains, and emotional investments become painfully meaningful. We experienced this devastating outcome twice during our demo session, and similar to FromSoftware titles, attempting to recover possessions from deceased characters provides an intensely thrilling challenge.

However, this represents merely one dimension of the complete experience. Our Darkest Days innovatively combines its conventional action-oriented component with a comprehensive secondary gameplay style. When not navigating the hazardous remains of civilization, the game transforms into a community simulation reminiscent of Fallout Shelter.

Although we experienced only the initial portion, the interconnected nature of both gameplay styles became immediately apparent. The integration of these distinct concepts feels remarkably logical, and PikPok appears positioned to successfully execute this ambitious vision.

Advanced Survival Strategies and Common Pitfalls

Strategic Resource Prioritization: Focus on collecting medical supplies and weapon components first, as these provide immediate survival advantages. Avoid over-collecting building materials during early missions when inventory space is limited.

Common Beginner Mistakes: New players often underestimate zombie aggression ranges and fail to listen for audio cues indicating nearby threats. Always maintain escape routes and never corner yourself in enclosed spaces.

Advanced Movement Techniques: Master the dodge-roll mechanic to evade charging zombies. Time your movements to avoid exhaustion meters depleting, which leaves you vulnerable to attacks.

Character Selection Strategy: Balance your expedition teams with both combat specialists and resource gatherers. Sending only fighters limits your scavenging efficiency, while exclusively sending gatherers increases mission failure risks.

Risk Assessment Protocol: Evaluate each mission’s potential rewards against character value. Losing a high-level character for minimal resources represents poor strategic decision-making that can cripple your community’s long-term survival chances.

Community Management Dynamics

In conventional simulation games, your primary responsibility involves developing your headquarters. Constructing additional facilities, recruiting new members, and maintaining a flourishing community over time using standard resources. Ensuring population satisfaction, providing adequate nourishment, and protecting everyone from deadly zombies remain critical objectives, as anticipated.

However, unlike comparable titles where you typically dispatch your most capable community members on assignments, this game revolutionizes the approach. Whether expanding territorial control, eliminating local threats, or collecting materials, these operations typically occur automatically without player involvement. Here, envision identical goals but with complete player control throughout the entire process.

Selecting which survivors to deploy into the dangerous environment remains entirely your decision. Endanger an established community member and the consequences may persist, or assign an inexperienced recruit and watch veteran survivors develop distrust toward your leadership.

The experience develops across an extensive and highly replayable single-player storyline that we eagerly anticipate experiencing during early 2024. Currently, we continue reflecting on our poor choices that resulted in two community members perishing mere feet from each other along frigid Texas roadways.
