IndieLand 2023 pivots to digital format with strategic focus on quality over scale for indie game showcase
The Strategic Pivot to Digital Excellence
We engaged with That One Video Gamer’s leadership to explore their comprehensive vision for IndieLand 2023 and the event’s strategic trajectory moving forward.
Entering its seventh consecutive year, the IndieLand showcase represents a pivotal moment for independent gaming. Our discussion with Jirard Khalil and Michael Barrye from TOVG revealed significant strategic adjustments for this year’s presentation, along with ambitious long-term objectives.
Since its inception in 2018, the annual independent gaming celebration organized by That One Video Gamer has undergone substantial evolution. For the upcoming 2023 edition, the production team is implementing a more sophisticated and technically advanced presentation approach, deliberately avoiding overextension that could compromise production quality.
The 2019 IndieLand fundraising campaign included objectives for transitioning to live events. Global circumstances in 2020 necessitated postponing this initiative until 2022, when the Los Angeles-based event demonstrated remarkable success and audience engagement.
This year marks a strategic return to exclusively digital distribution, with TOVG announcing IndieLand 2023 will stream through platforms including Twitch and YouTube. When questioned about this directional shift, Barrye emphasized prioritizing “polished, exceptional production quality” over expanding beyond their operational capacity.

“Jirard invited me into his office specifically to discuss IndieLand’s direction, stating ‘Mikey, we’re overextending ourselves with current project commitments.’ Our team typically pushes boundaries consistently, but this situation demanded acknowledging our operational limitations,” Barrye explained.
“This represented a crucial moment where Jirard emphasized the necessity of understanding our constraints. While we possessed the capability to organize another physical event, the envisioned production elements might not have achieved their intended execution quality.”

“Evaluating our current project timeline and resource allocation, producing an exceptional digital presentation ultimately serves our audience better than delivering an overly ambitious but underdeveloped physical event.”
Future Vision and Development Goals
Although IndieLand 2023’s format is established, the TOVG team maintains ambitious forward-looking perspectives regarding the event’s continued development and expansion.
“We aspire to achieve recognition comparable to established industry events like The Game Awards, particularly regarding exclusive content reveals. Last year’s presentation of the Blossom Tales II: The Minotaur Prince trailer, provided through our partnership with PlayTonic Friends, generated significant excitement and demonstrated our growing industry influence,” the team shared.
Beyond game announcement opportunities, the production team aims to maintain their tradition of featuring specially developed gameplay demonstrations created specifically for IndieLand presentations.
The creative team has explored numerous innovative concepts, though many involve complex production requirements such as game development competitions and convention-style events that demand substantial financial investment.
“Our operational reality involves self-financing, with substantial funding dependencies on my performance as a business owner,” Jirard clarified regarding their financial structure.
“The Completionist’s annual performance directly influences IndieLand’s production scale. Successful business years enable expanded physical events, while challenging periods necessitate digital-focused presentations.”
Looking toward future developments, Jirard envisions establishing IndieLand as the premier independent gaming revelation stream, featuring numerous world premieres that provide unprecedented exposure for independent developers.
Regardless of potential format evolution, the TOVG team remains committed to maintaining authentic, meaningful conversations with game developers that reveal their creative processes and personal journeys.
“Our developer interviews adopt an approach reminiscent of popular interview formats, focusing on genuine emotional authenticity rather than gimmicks. Developers share their creative passion and development challenges in remarkably transparent conversations that demand significant vulnerability.
“When we invite developers to participate in conversations with The Completionist, we typically encounter two distinct reactions. Some express immediate excitement about engaging with Jirard’s established reputation, while others experience initial apprehension about the exposure.
“The alternative response involves developers expressing genuine appreciation for Jirard’s work and enthusiasm about the interview opportunity.”
Building a Lasting Legacy
Jirard’s primary aspiration involves creating meaningful industry impact that inspires future generations while honoring the legacy established through their ongoing efforts.
“Our organizational philosophy centers on creating substantial industry influence that persists beyond our direct involvement. We aim to establish standards and traditions that future content creators will respect and continue, maintaining the foundational principles we’ve established throughout our journey,” Jirard stated regarding their long-term vision.
Our publication conducted an extensive three-part interview series with the TOVG team. Previous installments are available for those seeking additional context and background information.
IndieLand returns for its 2023 presentation October 20-22, streaming exclusively through The Completionist’s official Twitch channel with enhanced production quality and carefully curated independent game showcases.
Strategic Insights for Gaming Event Organizers
Based on TOVG’s approach with IndieLand 2023, event organizers can learn several key lessons about sustainable showcase development:
Resource Management: Recognize when scaling back produces better results than overextending. Digital events often allow for higher production values with limited resources.
Content Curation: Focus on fewer, higher-quality reveals rather than quantity. A tightly produced 2-hour showcase often outperforms a bloated 4-hour event.
Developer Relationships: Build genuine connections with indie studios. The most compelling content comes from developers who trust the platform and feel comfortable sharing their authentic stories.
Financial Planning: Establish clear funding models that don’t jeopardize your core business. Self-funded events should have defined budgetary boundaries.
