Master Espeon raids in Pokemon Go: Top counters, strategies, and event timing
Event Overview
For a limited time during Pokemon Go’s Valentine’s Day Collection Challenge (ending February 18), the elusive Espeon appears in 3-star raids.
This psychic-type Eeveelution, first introduced in Generation II, typically requires specific evolution methods to obtain. The current raid availability gives trainers a rare opportunity to add this fan-favorite feline Pokemon to their collection with significantly less effort than usual.
While categorized as a 3-star raid, Espeon presents a considerable challenge for solo players. Its high Special Attack stat means unprepared trainers may struggle, making team composition and type advantages crucial for success.
Espeon’s Strengths and Weaknesses
As a pure Psychic-type, Espeon has three key vulnerabilities that savvy trainers should exploit:
- Bug-type attacks deal 160% normal damage
- Dark-type moves are similarly super effective at 160%
- Ghost-type attacks also hit for 160% damage
When selecting counters, prioritize Pokemon with these attack types AND high DPS (Damage Per Second) moves. The following elite performers combine both:
- Chandelure (Ghost/Fire) with Hex and Shadow Ball – Highest ghost-type DPS
- Darkrai (Dark) with Snarl and Shadow Ball – Special attack reduction bonus
- Giratina (Ghost/Dragon) with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball – Excellent bulk
- Hydreigon (Dark/Dragon) with Bite and Dark Pulse – Reliable dark attacker
- Weavile (Dark/Ice) with Feint Attack and Foul Play – Fast-hitting bug option
Advanced Battle Strategies
To maximize your success against Espeon, consider these pro tactics:
- Dodge strategically – Espeon’s Psychic and Future Sight attacks hit hard. Watch for the yellow flash indicating charge moves.
- Mix types in your team – While dark types are strong, including ghost or bug types prevents all your Pokemon sharing weaknesses.
- Coordinate with friends – While possible solo, having 2-3 trainers makes the raid significantly easier.
- Monitor weather boosts – Fog boosts dark/ghost moves, while rain helps bug types. Plan your team accordingly.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Using fighting or poison types (Espeon resists these)
- Not healing between attempts – keep your top counters battle-ready
- Wasting time reviving during battle – better to let second team auto-deploy
Event Countdown
The Valentine’s Day Collection Challenge concludes on February 18 at 8 PM local time. After this deadline:
- Espeon will no longer appear in raids
- The only obtain method reverts to evolving Eevee with 25 candies + daytime walking requirement
- Shiny odds return to standard rates (currently slightly boosted during event)
Set a reminder to complete your raids before time runs out – this is by far the easiest way to obtain this normally elusive Pokemon.
