This unique partnership brought Israeli content creators together with Holocaust survivors through the interactive medium of Call of Duty: WWII gameplay.
The Holocaust represents one of humanity’s darkest chapters, where Nazi Germany systematically murdered approximately six million European Jews during World War II, marking it as the most extensive genocide in recorded history.
Alarmingly, despite its historical significance, research reveals a growing disconnect among younger generations regarding these atrocities. McCann’s comprehensive study uncovered that 76% of Israeli teenagers have never personally encountered a Holocaust survivor, while 48% of Jewish individuals aged 18-29 remained completely uninformed about the Babi Yar massacre specifically.
To address this educational gap for Generation Z, Zikaron Basalon designed an innovative approach using Call of Duty as an engagement catalyst, transforming gaming into a powerful historical learning tool.
Survivor Stories Meet Interactive Gaming
The charitable endeavor, named Fighting to Remember, featured five prominent Israeli influencers experiencing the Call of Duty: WWII narrative campaign while seated beside Holocaust survivors who provided real-time commentary.
During particularly poignant gameplay sequences, survivor Shimon Greenhouse shared his traumatic experience: “Nazi forces stormed the ghetto and forced everyone into the central square. They singled out five individuals, including my father. After we advanced five steps, they executed them from behind. My father collapsed onto me, leaving me drenched in his blood.”
In conversation with IGN Israel producer Danny-Ly Tiser, another survivor recounted: “During a September night coinciding with the Jewish New Year, German soldiers seized my grandfather and two sisters. All three perished at Auschwitz. What remains most haunting is that we never truly believed extermination awaited us.”
This innovative format created an immersive learning environment where historical events transitioned from abstract concepts to emotionally resonant experiences, demonstrating gaming’s potential as an educational medium.
Expanding the Educational Reach
Beyond the initial gaming sessions, Fighting to Remember expanded into a documentary series comprising multiple 15-minute extended conversation segments available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
