Hades dev wants Zagreus added to Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Hades creator eyes Smash Ultimate roster spot for Zagreus as final DLC slots loom

The Smash Ultimate Phenomenon

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has redefined crossover gaming with its unprecedented roster of 89 fighters, creating a platform where gaming icons from different universes collide. The game’s continued success hinges on strategic character additions that excite the community.

What began as a Nintendo all-star battle royale has evolved into a celebration of gaming history, with third-party characters like Sonic, Cloud Strife, and Joker joining the fray. Each new fighter announcement generates massive buzz, making roster selection a high-stakes decision for Nintendo.

Hades’ Meteoric Rise

Supergiant Games’ rogue-like masterpiece Hades emerged as one of 2020’s most decorated titles, earning Game of the Year honors from multiple outlets including the Game Developers Choice Awards. Its protagonist Zagreus, the rebellious prince of the Underworld, has become an instantly recognizable gaming icon.

The game’s success stems from its perfect marriage of responsive combat, compelling narrative, and stunning art direction – all elements that would translate well to Smash’s platform fighter mechanics. Hades’ combat system already features special moves and god-granted abilities that could form the basis of an interesting Smash moveset.

Developer Perspectives

Greg Kasavin, Hades’ writer and creative director, expressed unbridled enthusiasm when asked about Zagreus potentially joining Smash during an interview with The Gamer. “On a personal level, I think that would be amazing,” Kasavin stated, while cautioning fans not to read too much into his comments.

He praised Smash’s ability to faithfully adapt characters, citing examples like Minecraft’s Steve and Fatal Fury’s Terry Bogard. “They brought in Terry Bogard, who I love as a NEO-GEO fighting game fan… I think they would do an incredible job with Zagreus,” Kasavin added, highlighting the development team’s track record with unconventional fighters.

The Reality of Roster Additions

With only two remaining slots in Fighters Pass Volume 2, competition for inclusion is fierce. Kasavin himself acknowledged the challenges: “It’s one of those things since I’m sure they have a very long list.” Historical patterns suggest Nintendo prioritizes characters that either represent major franchises or have significant anniversary timing.

While Hades’ recent success gives Zagreus strong credentials, factors like Nintendo’s relationship with Supergiant Games and the character’s recognition among casual players may influence the final decision. The next fighter reveal at E3 2021 could provide clues about Nintendo’s selection criteria for these final coveted spots.
