Gekko revealed as Valorant Agent 22: Release window, abilities & more

Master Gekko’s creature-based abilities and strategic playstyle to dominate in Valorant Episode 6 Act 2

Meet Gekko: Valorant’s Creature-Controlling Initiator

Riot Games has officially unveiled Valorant’s 22nd agent – Gekko, an innovative Initiator hailing from Los Angeles who brings a fresh approach to tactical gameplay with his creature companions.

Gekko expands Valorant’s strategic landscape as the sixth Initiator, introducing unprecedented creature-based mechanics that redefine how teams approach site execution and information gathering.

This American agent marks the latest addition since Harbor’s introduction, bringing the total roster to 21 unique characters. Gekko stands out with his distinctive ability to deploy and reclaim creatures, offering sustainable utility that rewards strategic foresight.

Before his official reveal, data miners identified him under the codename ‘SmokeDancer,’ though his final design emphasizes creature companionship over smoke-based abilities.

Why limit yourself to individual abilities when you can command an entire team of creatures?

Joe Killeen, Gekko’s Narrative Writer, explained the creative process: “Naming Gekko’s abilities presented unique challenges since each functions as a distinct character with personality. We designed them as Gekko’s companions rather than simple tools.”

Gekko’s Unique Ability Kit and Creature Mechanics

Gekko’s arsenal revolves around four distinct creatures, each serving specific tactical purposes while introducing the innovative globule reclamation system that allows ability recycling.

The globule mechanic represents Gekko’s core innovation – after creatures complete their actions, they transform into collectible globules that can be retrieved to regain ability charges after a brief cooldown period.

  • Dizzy (E): Deploy Dizzy to send this flying companion soaring through the air. After charging up, Dizzy discharges plasma bursts that blind any enemies within visual range. Once her energy depletes, she transforms into a dormant globule that can be collected to restore the ability charge following a short recovery period.
  • Wingman (Q): Activate Wingman to dispatch this ground-based ally who advances toward enemy positions. Wingman delivers a disorienting concussive blast upon detecting the first opponent. The alternate fire function enables Wingman to either plant or defuse the Spike when aimed at a bombsite or active spike, provided Gekko carries the spike for planting. After completion, Wingman becomes a retrievable globule for charge restoration.
  • Mosh Pit (C): Equip Mosh to launch this explosive entity similar to a grenade, with alternative underhand throwing capability. Upon impact, Mosh splits into multiple duplicates covering a substantial area before detonating after a brief delay, creating effective zone denial.
  • Thrash (X): Gekko’s ultimate ability connects him mentally with Thrash, allowing direct control to navigate through contested areas. Activation triggers a powerful lunge and explosion that temporarily captures enemies within the blast radius. Following detonation, Thrash converts into a reclaimable globule, with the unique capability of being recovered once per round.
  • Advanced Strategies and Tactical Applications

Mastering Gekko requires understanding optimal ability sequences and positioning to maximize his creature effectiveness while minimizing counterplay opportunities.

Entry Execution Strategy: Initiate pushes with Dizzy for aerial reconnaissance and blinding, followed by Wingman to clear corners. Time Mosh Pit to deny defender rotations or post-plant positions. The delayed explosion requires precise timing anticipation.

Spike Management: Wingman’s spike planting capability creates unique fake-plant scenarios and allows Gekko to maintain defensive positioning during crucial moments. However, remember that Wingman moves predictably and can be eliminated before completing objectives.

Common Beginner Mistakes: New Gekko players often mismanage globule reclamation, leaving valuable ability charges uncontested. Additionally, poor Wingman positioning makes him vulnerable to early elimination, and misjudging Mosh Pit’s delay timing results in wasted utility.

Advanced Technique: Use Thrash’s reclaim feature strategically by deploying her for information gathering first, then retrieving for potential second usage during execute phases. This dual-purpose approach maximizes ultimate value throughout the round.

    Release Date and Competitive Integration

Gekko officially joins the Valorant roster on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 as the flagship addition to Episode 6 Act 2, accompanied by new battle pass content and cosmetic items.

The agent reveal occurred on March 4 during the VCT LOCK//IN grand finals, featuring an exhibition match with popular streamer Tarik ‘tarik’ Celik and professional player Leonardo ‘frttt’ Braz demonstrating Gekko’s capabilities alongside other content creators and pro players.

This strategic timing positioned Gekko’s debut within Valorant’s premier competitive event, allowing professional players to immediately begin developing meta strategies around his unique creature-based kit.
