NAVI’s crisis management strategies for esports operations during conflict and supporting Ukrainian players
From Memes to Crisis: NAVI’s Sudden Pivot
NAVI COO Aleksey ‘xaoc’ Kucherov outlines the emergency measures his organization implemented to sustain operations during active military conflict in Ukraine.
Aleksey ‘xaoc’ Kucherov, NAVI’s Chief Operating Officer, provided Dexerto with exclusive insights into the organization’s emergency response protocols activated when Russia initiated hostilities against Ukraine.
Just hours before the invasion commenced, NAVI’s social media presence remained lighthearted, featuring a Dota 2 meme celebrating Valve’s 7.31 gameplay update. The post humorously depicted Squee—one-third of the Techies hero composition—superimposed onto Sonic from the 2020 film adaptation. This content appeared mere minutes after the patch release, when the specter of immediate warfare seemed distant to most observers.
Within twenty-four hours, as explosions reverberated across Ukrainian cities, NAVI’s communication strategy underwent complete transformation. The organization abandoned routine gaming content in favor of condemning the military aggression and advocating for diplomatic resolutions to the escalating crisis.

The Kyiv-based organization subsequently dedicated its digital platforms almost exclusively to raising international awareness and generating support for Ukraine. Their YouTube channel, typically filled with competitive highlights and player content, instead featured a compilation of Ukrainian esports personalities united in calls for peace and national solidarity.
Business Continuity Under Fire
Managing an organization of NAVI’s scale—approximately 170 staff across management, operations, and competitive rosters—presented extraordinary challenges during active warfare. While many Kyiv-based employees relocated to safer regions, others remained in the capital city as Russian forces advanced deeper into Ukrainian territory.
NAVI leadership established two primary operational priorities: ensuring organizational functionality and providing comprehensive support to Ukrainian personnel. This encompassed relocation assistance, humanitarian donation coordination, and global awareness campaigns about conditions within the country.

With numerous employees taking refuge in bomb shelters and others—including founder Alexander ‘ZeroGravity’ Kokhanovskyy—joining Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces, available staff faced overwhelming responsibilities.
“Operational parameters have completely transformed, requiring all capable personnel to assume emergency duties,” NAVI COO Aleksey ‘xaoc’ Kucherov explained to Dexerto.
Xaoc, a former competitive Counter-Strike professional with tenures at HellRaisers and Heroic before joining NAVI in 2020, evacuated Ukraine with his family shortly before hostilities commenced as a precautionary measure.
He relocated alongside NAVI’s finance and legal department members to secure the organization’s operational continuity should the conflict intensify further.
“Without these precautionary measures, employee circumstances would have deteriorated significantly,” he clarified. “Risk mitigation became our paramount concern.”
Supporting the CS:GO Roster Through Crisis
NAVI’s CS:GO squad received news of the invasion while competing at IEM Katowice in Poland, one of esports’ most prestigious annual tournaments.
On February 25, an emotionally overwhelmed Aleksandr ‘s1mple’ Kostyliev delivered a poignant peace appeal from the Spodek Arena stage. The Ukrainian superstar, normally residing in Kyiv, emphasized the international friendships forged through esports and stressed that competitive gamers bear no responsibility for governmental military decisions.

He specifically highlighted his continued camaraderie with Russian teammates, emphasizing their unified front throughout the crisis. The address accumulated over three million Twitter views by March 10, capturing the transcendent quality that distinguishes esports icons like s1mple who surpass their competitive domains.
Post-tournament, the team dispersed across different locations. S1mple, Valeriy ‘b1t’ Vakhovskiy, and coach Andrey ‘B1ad3’ Gorodenskiy remained in Poland, while Russian roster members Kirill ‘Boombl4’ Mikhailov, Ilya ‘Perfecto’ Zalutskiy, and Denis ‘electronic’ Sharipov returned to Russia.
“We’re evaluating optimal pathways forward,” xaoc stated. “We remain hopeful about securing exit permissions for our Russian players despite escalating border restrictions and visa uncertainties.
“Initial days brought profound shock, but the team now recognizes the necessity of adapting to these unprecedented circumstances.”
S1mple, currently housed at Warsaw’s Kinguin Esports Performance Center, has publicly discussed the psychological strain caused by warfare separation from family and friends.
During a recent stream, he disclosed missing his mother’s birthday due to the conflict, noting she celebrated in darkness fearing artillery attacks. He also admitted losing motivation for competitive play recently.
“We’re providing comprehensive assistance to players’ families since direct intervention remains impossible amidst active danger,” xaoc commented regarding Ukrainian roster support.
“We’re managing housing arrangements, transportation logistics, and visa processing. Conditions evolve daily.”
Ukrainian players aren’t the only roster members requiring support. According to xaoc, certain Russian competitors “are attempting to depart Russia while exit opportunities persist,” apprehensive about potential consequences as the conflict prolongs and evolves.
“They’re considering citizenship alterations where feasible, having grasped their probable near-future circumstances,” he noted.
Ukrainian Esports Ecosystem Under Siege
Two weeks into Russia’s comprehensive invasion, warfare continues endangering much of Ukraine, affecting all societal sectors. Following years of progressive expansion across multiple domains, Ukrainian esports now confronts adaptation to a transformed reality where normalcy remains distant.
On March 2, Ukrainian organization HellRaisers—established in 2014—announced operational suspension for the conflict’s duration. Twenty-four-year-old Viktor ‘sdy’ Orudzhev, competing for CS:GO squad MAD Lions, joined Kostopil’s civil guard after relocating from Kyiv to northwestern Ukraine.

WePlay Esports employees, another Kyiv-based tournament organizer, transitioned to remote work on February 24. While the company committed to maintaining “all legal and financial obligations for ourselves and partners,” questions persist regarding their CS:GO academy league’s viability.
The tournament’s LAN segment—particularly valuable for providing emerging competitors essential stage exposure—was already omitted from Season 3 in early February due to Ukrainian geopolitical concerns.
Xaoc anticipates the domestic esports landscape’s transformation will heavily depend on conflict duration. NAVI, preparing to discuss potential headquarters relocation from Kyiv “in the near future,” has suspended various projects pending clearer future projections.
Rebuilding and Moving Forward
“Most partners demonstrate exceptional understanding and support, for which we’re profoundly grateful,” xaoc observed. “They recognize our collaborative methodology and maintain confidence in future stabilization.”
NAVI’s social media channels maintained silence for several days, yet behind the scenes, intensive efforts continue restoring organizational normalcy—however that might be redefined during periods where millions experience profound disruption.
Current priorities include facilitating Russian CS:GO players’ travel to Germany for ESL Pro League 15. Should they successfully journey—NAVI maintains optimism—the event presents another platform for esports to communicate unity and coexistence messages. Additionally, it offers the roster opportunities to provide loyal supporters, especially Ukrainian fans, with moments of celebration.
“We extend heartfelt gratitude to our community for their unwavering support during this crisis,” xaoc concluded. “For their proactive positioning and comprehension.”
