Epic Games is distributing 1,000 V-Bucks as compensation for the randomized loot box system originally featured in Fortnite’s “Save the World” mode, which was discontinued in 2019 following player backlash.
Introduced at Fortnite’s 2017 launch, the co-op “Save the World” mode utilized loot llamas containing random items. Unlike modern transparent systems, these didn’t allow players to preview contents before purchase, sparking criticism about their gambling-like nature.
Compensation Details
Following a class action settlement approved in February 2021, Epic is compensating affected players globally, not just in the United States where the lawsuit originated. “We’re awarding 1,000 V-Bucks to anyone that purchased a random Loot Llama,” the company stated in an official blog post.
This compensation reflects Epic’s current philosophy: “We believe players should know upfront what they’re paying for.” The replacement X-Ray Llamas now clearly display contents before purchase.
Rocket League players who purchased similar randomized crates will receive 1,000 Credits through the same initiative, demonstrating Epic’s commitment to fair monetization across its titles.
Practical Information
The V-Bucks should appear automatically in eligible accounts with no player action required. However, reports indicate some who never purchased Loot Llamas are receiving compensation, possibly due to completing the “Save the World” tutorial before the 2019 changes.
Distribution occurs gradually worldwide. If you don’t see your compensation immediately, allow several days for processing. The one-time payment is standardized at 1,000 V-Bucks regardless of how many Loot Llamas were purchased.
Epic’s legal representative Jeffrey Jacobson told The Verge: “It’s the right thing to do. We feel good about the settlement. We hope our players agree with us.”
