Fortnite’s Boundless Set disabled in competitive play due to visibility exploit issues
The Boundless Set Controversy
Fortnite’s Boundless Set superhero skins have sparked significant debate within the gaming community since their introduction. These customizable outfits, designed to resemble comic book heroes, became controversial when players discovered they could be manipulated to create nearly invisible characters.
The most problematic variants allowed players to appear as single-color silhouettes, blending seamlessly with various in-game environments.
Competitive players quickly identified the tactical advantage: all-black or all-white versions made characters extremely difficult to spot in many combat scenarios. This created what the community labeled a ‘pay-to-win’ situation, where purchased cosmetics provided measurable gameplay benefits.
Epic’s Response and Temporary Ban
Epic Games initially attempted to resolve the issue with the v13.50 update, which restricted extreme color variations. However, resourceful players discovered a saving mechanism loophole that restored the problematic appearances.
On February 3, 2021, the Fortnite Status account announced: “Due to an outstanding issue with the Boundless Set, we are temporarily disabling these Outfits from competitive play. Players who select one will instead appear as a Default Outfit in competitive playlists.”
The current solution represents a more drastic measure, completely removing the skins from ranked matches while allowing their use in casual modes. Players attempting to equip these cosmetics in competitive arenas will automatically default to standard character models.
Player Impact and Future Updates
While competitive players must wait for the v15.40 update to use these skins properly, casual matches still permit the controversial appearances. This creates an uneven playing field where players can practice with advantages unavailable in ranked play.
Epic’s track record with similar fixes suggests players should remain cautious. The previous solution failed to fully address the problem, and some community members speculate the v15.40 update might encounter similar challenges.
