Danny Engels outlines strategic approach to revive Evil Geniuses’ struggling Counter-Strike team amid roster challenges
The Current Challenge: Energy Management Crisis
Danny Engels, recently appointed as gaming excellence director at Evil Geniuses, has identified energy management as the primary obstacle facing the organization’s Counter-Strike roster. Since assuming his position in July, Engels has focused on revitalizing a squad that has experienced significant performance decline over the past competitive season.
Counter-Strike continues to represent a cornerstone of Evil Geniuses’ esports strategy according to director Danny Engels, who has committed substantial resources toward returning the team to championship form.
When Engels joined Evil Geniuses during the summer, his immediate priority involved stabilizing a Counter-Strike division that had languished competitively for approximately twelve months. The team’s dramatic fall from elite status represented one of the most challenging turnaround projects in North American esports.
Evil Geniuses initially made waves upon re-entering the competitive Counter-Strike landscape in September 2019 following nearly a decade away from the scene. The organization acquired a moderately successful NRG roster that immediately transformed into a championship-caliber unit under the EG banner, capturing both ESL One New York and StarSeries & i-League CS:GO Season 8 within a single month.
This explosive success briefly propelled the squad to the summit of HLTV’s global rankings, with the team ultimately securing recognition as the fourth-best competitive roster worldwide for 2019.
EG maintained top-five global standing throughout the initial pandemic months, securing several regional tournament victories before their European campaign following the summer break triggered a dramatic competitive collapse. The North American representatives have since experienced consistent disappointment, currently occupying the 40th position in worldwide rankings.
“Energy management represents our most significant competitive hurdle,” Engels revealed in discussions with Dexerto. “This challenge extends beyond our organization, affecting competitive teams across multiple esports titles who must learn optimal energy conservation strategies.

“The demanding Counter-Strike competitive circuit creates inherent difficulties for proper energy management. We observe similar challenges in traditional sports, where coaches occasionally bench star players during less critical matches to ensure peak performance during championship events.
“Our organization has particularly struggled with this aspect. The European relocation presented complications despite initial 2021 optimism about returning to LAN competitions and normalized tournament structures.
“The continued COVID-19 restrictions created our most significant challenge, generating frustration throughout the organization as pandemic conditions made competitive Counter-Strike substantially more difficult to navigate.”
Strategic Management Overhaul
Engels brings extensive organizational expertise from his nearly four-year tenure with G2 Esports, where he progressed through multiple leadership positions including racing team management and head of esports operations.
During his G2 tenure, Engels observed the critical importance of the synergistic relationship between head coach Damien ‘maLeK’ Marcel and team manager Jérôme ‘NiaK’ Sudries. He aims to replicate this successful management framework at Evil Geniuses by recruiting a dedicated team administrator who can effectively bridge communication between competitive roster and organizational leadership.
“The team administrator represents one of our most crucial organizational positions,” Engels elaborated. “The collaborative dynamic between maLeK and NiaK supporting G2’s roster demonstrates the power of effective management partnerships.
“I envision the team admin role as fundamental to establishing elite operational standards beyond in-game performance. This position requires someone capable of understanding player needs in coordination with coaching staff, ensuring our competitors receive every necessary resource to achieve success.”

Since joining Evil Geniuses, Engels has allocated substantial attention to the CS:GO division while maintaining oversight of other competitive teams. He reports observing motivated players determined to identify solutions during this pivotal tournament period.
Roster Dynamics and Tournament Challenges
The team prepares for IEM Fall North America, representing the final qualifying opportunity for the upcoming Major tournament. This event carries season-defining implications, as poor performance could eliminate any chance of participating in PGL Major Stockholm – the first CS:GO Major championship in over two years.
IEM Fall marks the competitive return of Peter ‘stanislaw’ Jarguz and Vincent ‘Brehze’ Cayonte following mental health breaks. Travel restrictions will separate the roster across multiple locations, with full reunification scheduled for Europe before the BLAST Premier Fall Showdown and potential Major participation.
“CeRq and MICHU will compete from Mexico due to travel restrictions preventing their entry to the United States or Canada,” Engels clarified. “Simultaneously, relocating the entire roster to Mexico for a single tournament week seemed impractical.
“We collectively determined that competing from individual ‘home’ locations represented our optimal approach before refocusing on European competitions following IEM Fall.”
Engels acknowledged that high-stakes pressure has created suboptimal practice conditions for IEM Fall preparation. However, he characterized the recent CS:GO update – featuring controversial grenade-dropping mechanics – as potentially beneficial for his squad since all teams approach the tournament with equal adaptation requirements.
“The timing of this gameplay update might work to our advantage by potentially resetting competitive meta understanding,” he explained.
“Daps and stanislaw will maximize available preparation time before IEM Fall and subsequent European competitions. While practice opportunities remain limited, we believe our position remains reasonably strong, partially thanks to the recent gameplay changes.”
Hope alone cannot resolve Evil Geniuses’ current competitive predicament. The team has appeared organizationally fragmented – an understandable consequence of roster instability and frequent stand-in usage – with even star performers failing to deliver match-winning performances. Vincent ‘Brehze’ Cayonte, previously ranked as 2019’s eighth-best global player, has demonstrated inconsistent form and engagement throughout the year, raising questions about his competitive commitment.
Strategic roster adjustments might inject renewed vitality into the squad, but current circumstances limit organizational options.
“Our flexibility remains severely constrained,” Engels admitted. “Limited options exist, particularly with the approaching Major championship. Roster modifications remain impossible due to RMR tournament regulations.
“Our immediate focus centers entirely on Major qualification, mirroring numerous other competitive organizations. We must ensure our current lineup receives necessary resources to concentrate on Major preparation, dedicated effort, and hopefully delivering pride-worthy tournament performances.”
Organizational Commitment and Future Vision
Persistent speculation throughout the past year has suggested Evil Geniuses might exit Counter-Strike competition. Such a move would severely impact North American CS:GO, following similar organizational departures including 100 Thieves’ notable exit.
In December 2020, former EG esports director Greg Kim informed HLTV.org that Counter-Strike maintained “priority” status within the organization.
Engels reaffirmed this organizational stance despite continued competitive struggles and the departure of star player Ethan ‘Ethan’ Arnold to Valorant.
When questioned whether Evil Geniuses maintains Counter-Strike involvement solely due to tournament organizer commitments, he responded “Were that true, we would likely emulate 100 Thieves’ approach, which demonstrated that exiting ESL and BLAST partnerships remains feasible.”
“We maintain full engagement with our tournament partners, supporting their vision for Counter-Strike’s competitive future.
“Despite underwhelming competitive results, our championship aspirations remain unchanged from our 2019 and 2020 trophy successes.
“We anticipate that global normalization will provide improved operational foundations. The current North American-European separation, requiring extended European hotel stays, clearly impacts performance. Similar challenges have affected organizations like Team Liquid.
“We look forward to returning environments where we can fully celebrate our ESL and BLAST partnerships.”
Engels recognized the difficulties in identifying emerging talent following substantial player migration from CS:GO to Valorant that has depleted North America’s competitive pipeline.
Nevertheless, he emphasized Evil Geniuses’ determination to reestablish the team as “elite championship contenders,” citing his personal engagement with the game as evidence of organizational commitment.
With nine years of SK Gaming experience including five as a professional player, Engels possesses deep understanding of the organization’s Counter-Strike legacy. His extensive game knowledge and competitive background represented key factors in Evil Geniuses’ decision to recruit him.
“Every Evil Geniuses representative has consistently emphasized Counter-Strike’s value and organizational importance,” he stated. “This classic esports title provides significant credibility within the industry.
“The organization would not have recruited me for relocation to Seattle without confidence in my ability to contribute Counter-Strike expertise alongside broader esports knowledge.
“We’re building toward Counter-Strike becoming a foundational esports pillar for Evil Geniuses, providing an exciting operational framework.
“I maintain deep passion for competitive esports and championship aspirations. My commitment to Evil Geniuses supporters guarantees maximum management effort toward restoring organizational success.”
