CPH Flames to retain CSGO team as Complexity deal falls through

Copenhagen Flames retain CS:GO roster after Complexity deal collapses, team focuses on 2022 rebuilding strategy

Deal Breakdown Timeline

Copenhagen Flames has officially announced they will maintain their current CS:GO roster following the collapse of transfer negotiations with Complexity Gaming.

The Danish organization confirmed the roster retention after comprehensive discussions with Complexity reached an impasse during the December transfer window.

Industry reports from Dexerto on December 20 indicated the acquisition faced serious complications when Complexity began evaluating alternative roster options.

The North American organization entered the player market following substantial roster changes after their unsuccessful qualification campaign for the PGL Major Stockholm.

Transfer discussions between the two esports organizations reached advanced stages, with Complexity initiating personal contract negotiations with individual players.

The acquisition appeared imminent until negotiations stalled when Complexity shifted focus toward other possibilities. HLTV.org reported on December 21 that the North American organization explored acquiring the core roster of Extra Salt combined with Michael ‘Grim’ Wince and Paytyn ‘junior’ Johnson.

In an October 21 social media post, Copenhagen Flames co-owner Daniel Vorborg expressed organizational limitations regarding player retention amid escalating transfer interest.

Stockholm Major Performance Impact

The Danish squad achieved an unexpected breakthrough performance during the New Legends Stage of the Stockholm Major, coming within a single map victory of securing a historic top-eight placement.

Notable victories against established organizations including Astralis, Heroic, and FaZe Clan solidified their position as an emerging force within competitive CS:GO — validating the reported $500,000 valuation as a strategically sound investment.

With the Complexity acquisition now definitively terminated, uncertainty surrounds the team’s competitive trajectory. However, Copenhagen Flames leadership emphasized unwavering commitment to supporting their competitive roster.

Copenhagen Flames has struggled to maintain their Major tournament performance level, declining to 15th position in HLTV’s global rankings following a temporary appearance among the top 10 teams during November.

For the competing athletes, joining an established organization like Complexity — with guaranteed participation in ESL Pro League and BLAST Premier tournaments — represented a significant career advancement opportunity.

Organization Commitment Strategy

“Our strategic direction remains consistent,” Vorborg informed Dexerto. “While players could potentially transfer to other organizations for increased compensation, financial considerations aren’t their exclusive priority.

“We maintain our commitment to developing organizational infrastructure around our competitive team. I’ve consistently communicated to our players that our primary organizational responsibility involves delivering enhanced resources and improved conditions within six-month development cycles — we have consistently fulfilled this commitment and intend to maintain this standard.

“We believe we provide an optimal environment for professional development and competitive performance, and we will continue prioritizing this delivery to our team.”

Player Career Considerations

Vorborg acknowledged that certain players potentially missed transfer opportunities due to expectations of maintaining roster continuity under Complexity’s organizational banner.

“I cannot provide specifics regarding other organizations, but we engaged in discussions with multiple prominent clubs, particularly those holding franchise slots which significantly interested our players,” he explained.

“Our athletes don’t prioritize financial compensation as their primary consideration but placed substantial value on guaranteed participation in ESL and/or BLAST tournaments. While this access would have benefited their careers, they never considered remaining with Copenhagen Flames as an unfavorable option — though they would pursue exceptional opportunities, which we completely understand.

“Currently, the team is enjoying a scheduled competitive break and demonstrates exceptional motivation to resume high-level performance now that the transfer situation has resolved. For the 2022 competitive season, we anticipate tournaments including the IEM Katowice Play-ins, which will provide invaluable experience for our entire organization.”
