Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Forgotten Battlefield walkthrough

Master the Forgotten Battlefield with advanced strategies, hidden collectibles, and a complete boss guide for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Arrival and Initial Exploration

Act 1 of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 concludes, thrusting you into the vast and pivotal Forgotten Battlefield. This zone serves as the gateway to the Paintress and is where you’ll meet the new party member, Verso, while grappling with enhanced combat mechanics and exploration systems.

You awaken on a secluded island. Your first action should be to open the map and mark the northern objective. Mount your Esquie and traverse the waters. However, rushing forward is a common novice error. Dedicate time to scout the peripheral areas for valuable resources and experiences that will aid you later.

Pre-Battlefield Exploration Checklist:

  • Northwest – Blades’ Graveyard: Search here to discover a new music record, a collectible that adds to your camp’s ambiance.
  • East – Gestral Beach: Engage in a lighthearted volleyball game. While optional, it’s a good way to acclimate to the game’s physics and timing outside of combat.

Use this time to engage scattered enemies and familiarize yourself with Verso’s combat style. Understanding her move set, particularly her light-based abilities, is crucial for the upcoming challenges. Once prepared, navigate north toward the colossal “33” emblem in the sky to officially commence the Forgotten Battlefield chapter.

Navigating the Core Battlefield: Collectibles and Pathing

Upon entering, you’ll be introduced to the Gradient Counter mechanic. This powerful enemy technique drains color from the environment, signaling a high-damage attack you must parry at the exact moment. After dispatching the introductory foe, head north to the main gate. It’s wise to rest and upgrade at the checkpoint here.

Pass through the gate and immediately take the right-hand wooden path to claim a Polished Chroma Catalyst. Chroma is the lifeblood of enhancement in Expedition 33; never bypass these.

Optimal Path for Key Loot:

  • At the next two intersections, consistently turn right. This route is populated with Nevrons, providing combat practice and Chroma drops.
  • Leap into the pit ahead and proceed north to uncover the Energizing Start IV Pictos, which boosts initial Action Points (AP).
  • Exiting this zone, head left toward the door, then right to scavenge more Chroma.
  • Venture west into a trench; at its terminus, you’ll find a Colour of Lumina collectible.

Backtrack from the trench, turn right to spot another Colour of Lumina glowing with a purple aura. Move north, ascend the stairs, clear the Nevrons, then head south to another staircase. Climb these to locate the Healing Tint Shard. A frequent mistake is searching for this shard *before* the final ascent—it only appears after climbing. Nearby, you’ll find the Sweet Kill Pictos, a game-changer that restores 50% health upon defeating any enemy.

Before charging north toward the next Nevron group, detour to the path on their left. At the base of a luminescent tree, a Revive Tint Shard awaits. Eliminate the Nevrons, then scale the subsequent ledges and stairs to reach the checkpoint for the optional Fort Ruins area.

Conquering the Optional Fort Ruins

The Fort Ruins is a challenging but highly rewarding detour. Advance and use the handholds to cross the chasm. Defeat the Troubador enemy—note its unique attack patterns compared to standard Nevrons.

Fort Ruins Loot Guide:

  • After crossing, climb the stairs on your right. Instead of descending, take another right onto a small ledge past the railing to discover the Energizing Death Pictos. This powerful ability grants AP to your surviving party members when the equipped Expeditioner falls, perfect for high-risk strategies.
  • Return to the main path and head south. Three Nevrons guard a chest containing another Colour of Lumina.

Return to the checkpoint flag to rest and upgrade. Descend the stairs and ledges, and at the bottom, proceed west to activate the next checkpoint at the Vanguard Point.

Strategic Preparation and Hidden Challenges

From the Vanguard Point, use the fallen cannon as a bridge to descend and go north. You’ll meet a Fading Woman who remains non-interactive for now. From her position, head east.

Hidden Exploration Path:

  • Watch for a side path on your left to find Expedition 41’s journal nestled in burning debris, offering lore insights.
  • Continue east, grabbing a Colour of Lumina, and defeat the Nevrons ahead. This leads to an optional superboss encounter. Victory rewards the Energizing Parry Pictos, which grants bonus AP for successful parries—an essential tool for AP-hungry builds.
  • Return to the previous corridor, head south, and climb a rope to find the Empowering Tint Pictos.

Backtrack to the Fading Woman and proceed west into the main Battlefield. Rest at the flag marked “48” if needed. Follow the north path to find a Colour of Lumina near a giant sword.

Petank Encounter Strategy: To the west, you’ll see a Petank. Clear the surrounding Nevrons first to avoid being overwhelmed. The Petank’s capture pedestal is southeast near a broken wall. Defeating it yields premium loot, including a Recoat (a powerful healing/resource item).

Scour the crates to the east and near the southwest ballista for extra Chroma. Return to the Fading Woman and take the path north of her.

Paint Cage Puzzle Solution:

  • At the fork, go left and destroy the conspicuously placed boxes to break the first lock.
  • Backtrack to the fork and look northeast near a tree stump for the second lock.
  • Continue forward, go left, and you’ll see the paint cage on your left. The third and final lock is on the right, hidden within a stack of crates. Shattering it grants a Chroma Elixir Shard.

Head east to discover Expedition 57’s journal near a remains with a trumpet. Climb the rope to meet Kasumi, the Gestral Merchant. He sells a rare Recoat and the Inverted Affinity Pictos. For advanced players: challenge and defeat Kasumi in a duel to unlock Obscur, a unique outfit for Maelle. Descend and go northeast to the Ancient Bridge checkpoint. This is your final opportunity to rest and upgrade before the boss.

Boss Battle: Dualliste – A Phase-by-Phase Breakdown

Dualliste presents a significant difficulty spike. Key Weakness: It is highly resistant to Fire but vulnerable to Light. Leverage Verso’s light-element abilities like Perfect Break for damage and Paradigm Shift to accelerate AP generation.

Phase 1 Tactics:

  • Shockwave Attack: It plunges its sword into the ground. Parry the moment just before the sword drives deeper for a perfect counter.
  • Four-Hit Swipe Combo: The sequence is Dodge, Jump, Dodge, Dodge. Mistiming the jump will result in a hit.
  • Six-Hit Swift Combo: Parry each strike as the sword is raised. The rhythm is fast but consistent.
  • Five-Hit Rapid Combo: Requires quick successive parries. Focus on the audio/visual cue of the sword swing.

Critical Advanced Tip: Any debuffs (like Vulnerability or Burn) applied in Phase 1 carry over into Phase 2. Applying a strong debuff late in Phase 1 can give you a major head start.

Phase 2 & The Inverted Status: Upon reaching half health, Dualliste draws a second sword, augmenting its aggression.

  • Dual Shockwave: It now creates two shockwaves—one on plunging and one on withdrawing. Parry at both moments. Listen for the distinct “schwing” sound signaling the withdrawal.
  • Nine-Hit Combo into Gradient Attack: Dodge the initial slashes. The combo culminates in a Gradient Attack (world loses color). You must execute a Gradient Counter here to avoid massive damage.
  • Six-Hit Swiping Combo: The updated pattern is Dodge, Jump, Jump, Dodge, Dodge, Dodge. The double jump is crucial.
  • Stormblood: Summons bloody clones for a four-hit combo. Parry the first three rapidly, then watch for Dualliste’s real body to lunge for the fourth, slower parry.

Most Critical Phase 2 Mechanic: When Dualliste’s health falls below 50% in this phase, it inflicts the Inverted status on your party. Healing items and spells will now deal damage instead. You must avoid all healing actions until the status expires or the battle ends. Rely on Pictos like Sweet Kill for health recovery during this perilous window.

Upon Dualliste’s defeat, a cinematic plays, and you are rewarded with a new weapon for Verso and the Combo Attack I Pictos. This victory solidifies your progress and sets the stage for the confrontation with the Paintress, marking the Forgotten Battlefield as a true test of your mastery over combat, exploration, and team synergy.
