Baldur’s Gate 3 Hotfix 17 fixes Gale’s departure bug, reduces save file sizes, and resolves multiple gameplay issues with practical solutions
Key Changes Overview
Baldur’s Gate 3’s latest update delivers crucial fixes that address player frustrations while improving overall game stability. Hotfix 17 focuses on resolving companion behavior issues, optimizing performance, and eliminating persistent bugs that have impacted gameplay experience.
The most significant improvements in Hotfix 17 center around companion management, particularly Gale’s demanding magical appetite, alongside technical enhancements that streamline save file management and resolve various gameplay disruptions.
Larian Studios continues their commitment to player satisfaction with this comprehensive hotfix that addresses both immediate concerns and underlying technical issues.
Detailed Patch Breakdown
The Gale companion issue represents one of the most significant quality-of-life improvements in this update. Previously, players faced an impossible situation where Gale would demand magical items but the interface wouldn’t display available options, forcing his permanent departure from the party.
This problem emerged following Hotfix 16’s adjustments to quest item accessibility. While that patch prevented players from getting trapped by having essential items stored in camp chests, it inadvertently broke Gale’s item donation interface, creating a catch-22 situation for players.
Larian’s temporary solution ensures Gale won’t abandon your party unless you explicitly state you’ll never provide magical items. The specific dialogue option “I’m not giving you anything. Not now, not ever” remains the only way to intentionally dismiss him from your group.

Technical improvements include enhanced save game compression that addresses Error 544 instances and reduces file sizes by eliminating summons that no longer exist in gameplay. This benefits players who maintain multiple save files or frequently create new characters.
Mac platform users receive important news that both Hotfix 16 and 17 will deploy together in an upcoming consolidated update, ensuring parity with other platforms and preventing version mismatch issues.
- We have increased the compression of savegames, which should fix several issues caused by large savegame files, including some instances of the Error 544 message. We have also reduced the size of save files by removing summons that don’t exist in the game anymore.
- This is a temporary bug fix that aims to avoid Gale immediately leaving the party when players are unable to hand over an item. In Hotfix #16, we began the process of updating a player’s ability to access certain quest-related items, even if they were in the camp chest, or in the inventory of a companion waiting at camp.
- However, the UI through which items can be donated to Gale has not yet been updated, which meant that the dialogue could be triggered if the items were available elsewhere, but would not show in the UI to be donated. This risked placing players in a situation where Gale expected an item from them, and they were unable to provide one.
- With this initial fix, closing the UI or using any line other than “I’m not giving you anything. Not now, not ever” will prevent Gale from immediately abandoning your party, until the UI logic has been updated.
- If you’re keen to give Gale the boot, and don’t have an actual shoe to share in your inventory, selecting “I’m not giving you anything. Not now, not ever”, will still cause Gale to leave your party, permanently!
Practical Player Strategies
For optimal companion management, always keep at least one common magical item in your active inventory when approaching Gale. Low-value magical equipment like +1 weapons or basic enchanted jewelry can satisfy his cravings without sacrificing powerful artifacts.
Save file management becomes crucial with these changes. Regularly delete old save files and consider maintaining only your most recent 5-10 saves to prevent bloated file sizes. The compression improvements work best when combined with proactive save management habits.
Advanced players should note that Honour Mode receives specific attention with Cazador’s Potent Mist Form fix. This ensures that tactical approaches to this challenging boss fight remain consistent and predictable, maintaining the mode’s integrity.
Common mistakes to avoid include storing Thieves’ Tools in camp chests and clicking far beyond open doors during movement. Both issues have been resolved but understanding their underlying causes helps prevent similar future problems.
