Inside ESO’s decade-long evolution: From Todd Howard’s office to 10-year celebration plans
The Vision: From Persistent Pitch to Reality
Creative director Rich Lambert provides exclusive insights into Elder Scrolls Online’s development journey in this Dexerto interview, detailing the multiplayer game’s creation, challenging launch period, current status, and exciting future directions.
During an exclusive interview with Dexerto, Elder Scrolls Online creative director Rich Lambert reflected on the multiplayer game, recounting its creation, the less-than-perfect launch that followed, where things stand today, and of course, what the future holds for the Elder Scrolls community.
When Bethesda announced Elder Scrolls Online in 2012, the community experienced mixed emotions—excitement blended with apprehension about translating the beloved single-player franchise into a persistent online world. The core Elder Scrolls identity centered on personal exploration and narrative immersion, making the MMO transition a significant creative risk that required careful execution.
In his detailed discussion with Dexerto, Lambert traced ESO’s origins from initial conceptualization through the complex decisions about timeline placement and multiplayer mechanics. Nearly a decade post-launch, the development team continues refining the experience while planning substantial future content.
With nearly twenty years at Bethesda, Lambert championed the multiplayer Elder Scrolls vision from its earliest stages. His persistence ultimately contributed to the formation of ZeniMax Online Studios and the greenlighting of what would become a decade-defining MMORPG project.
“Following my work on Oblivion, I made regular visits to Todd Howard’s office to advocate for an online adaptation,” Lambert recalled. “The breakthrough came when Todd summoned me to meet Matt Firor, who was establishing a dedicated online studio specifically for developing ESO.”
As the concept’s earliest proponent, Lambert naturally joined the development team. “Howard strongly recommended me to Firor, possibly because he’d grown tired of my persistent lobbying,” he joked. “After a four-hour discussion with Matt about the game’s potential, I joined the project and the rest became gaming history.”

Lore Integration: Finding ESO’s Place in Tamriel History
The Elder Scrolls universe features exceptionally deep lore spanning millennia, with each installment exploring specific historical periods that collectively expand understanding of Tamriel’s diverse cultures and races. This rich narrative foundation presented both opportunity and challenge for the ESO development team.
For Lambert and the creative team, selecting the appropriate historical era represented one of their most critical and complex decisions, requiring careful balance between established canon and creative freedom.
“Determining the optimal timeline placement proved exceptionally challenging,” Lambert explained. “After extensive discussion, Todd and Matt selected the Second Era, positioning events approximately one thousand years before other series entries.”
“The Interregnum period offered minimal established documentation—essentially a 400-year gap characterized by political chaos and limited historical records. This narrative vacuum provided perfect creative space to develop original stories while respecting existing lore boundaries.”
Launch Lessons: From Rocky Start to Refocused Vision
Following years of development, Elder Scrolls Online launched in 2014 (corrected from 2012), but initial player reception reflected confusion and connectivity issues. Lambert acknowledges these early struggles stemmed from the team’s ongoing process of defining ESO’s core identity and gameplay direction.
“Our launch version attempted to hybridize MMO conventions with Elder Scrolls mechanics, ultimately satisfying neither audience segment,” Lambert admitted. “This identity crisis forced fundamental reconsideration of our development priorities and core gameplay philosophy.”
The development team rapidly recognized that preserving authentic Elder Scrolls DNA provided the essential foundation for long-term success, prioritizing elements that distinguished the franchise from conventional MMOs.
“We ultimately prioritized Elder Scrolls authenticity above MMO conventions,” Lambert stated. “Every subsequent development decision centered on reinforcing this identity, including ensuring complete solo accessibility for players preferring single-player experiences.”
Despite establishing clearer creative direction, ESO remains an evolving project requiring continuous improvement. The game’s extensive updates and expansions demonstrate the development team’s adaptive approach throughout its nearly decade-long operational history.
“Development represents constant iterative work,” Lambert emphasized. “We maintain ongoing optimization while planning far ahead—zone development requires approximately 18 months, meaning we’re currently working on next year’s chapter despite recently launching Necrom. Our pipeline operates continuously with overlapping development cycles.”
Future Vision: 10-Year Celebration and Beyond
Elder Scrolls Online approaches its monumental 10-year operational milestone, representing a significant achievement in the modern gaming landscape. For Lambert and the development team, this anniversary warrants substantial celebration honoring both the game and its dedicated community.
“Expect significant announcements around November timeframe,” Lambert hinted. “We’re planning comprehensive celebrations marking ten years of live service, honoring team members who’ve contributed since 2007 pre-production phases.”
“This celebration acknowledges both the game’s longevity and our incredible community support. Few development teams maintain continuous engagement with a single project for this duration, and even fewer games reach the decade milestone before discontinuation. This achievement represents something truly special in contemporary gaming.”
When questioned about ESO’s future following the anniversary or potential scaling back for upcoming single-player titles, Lambert affirmed strong ongoing commitment to the MMO’s development and expansion.
“We’re actively developing features scheduled for late next year, narrative content planned for 2025 and 2026, and continuously integrating new concepts,” he confirmed. “Provided community engagement remains strong, we’ll continue supporting and expanding Elder Scrolls Online indefinitely.”
With upcoming patches and additional content announcements, Elder Scrolls Online continues offering substantial value to its player base. For ongoing coverage of this iconic franchise’s developments, follow Dexerto’s comprehensive ESO reporting.
